UA AND US Merger Talks

Actually they (the UAL pilot group) have it just about right. The only way this would work is if LCC pilots drop their LOA 93 grievance and provision for 2003 wages in event of a merger and sign off on Nicolau... in other words

THIS DEAL IS DOA

Once again, time off has been awarded for vulgar personal attacks. Stick to the topic. Discuss the issues, not each other. Thank you.

UA AFA chimes in....

"United Airlines needs to get its own house in order before attempting to hoist the problems management has created onto another business deal. We will oppose any transaction that serves to delay, disrupt or impede our efforts to improve compensation and working conditions," said Greg Davidowitch, AFA-CWA President at United Airlines.

Here is an interesting take on why some dont think the merger will even happen.

Sums up my thoughts better than I did. And attempts to reduce industry-wide capacity through deals of this sort tend to be counterproductive, since the reduction is typically sopped up by others, like WN. The net result is the same capacity, but less of it belonging to the "big boys."

On a side note, what does one call US now? It's not exactly a "legacy" carrier, nor is it (despite the stock symbol) exactly a "LCC" either. It's a monotreme.

Depends on who you ask. Some people use the "legacy" label and with US being the surviving corporate entity it fits (although these same people will often leave AS out and they've been around longer than US). Some people make a distinction between "network" and "low cost" carriers, and US falls in the "network" camp. Some use "network" and "point to point" and again US is in the "network" camp.

I know your contract is very very vaig... but you have a contract and it is AFA.... so covered under AFA's merger policies... AWA cant even figure out what a hostage clause is.... but AFA can.... if you have read the other posts after ours, apparantly Congress helped w/ the AA / TWA merger..... Which I was not aware of.... so just as I said before.... sit back .... relax and enjoy the ride.... there will be a few bumps in the road, that is for sure. ..... continue to move on..... it will all work out....

good luck.... hope you are on the next recall list....!
Thanks 🙂

I'm already being recalled. I start back on May 2nd. 🙂 But the only ride I'm gonna get if this goes thru is back to the unemployment line so you can imagine there's little to relax about. 🙂

I think this merger has a better chance this time around. The issues after the last attempt were apparent and there was more work to be done to move forward. They have worked behind the scenes to make certain this attempt at merging will be completed. \

They also know how the merger must be structured and have a plan for that as well. Doug parker is creative and intelligent and has figured out to make this work. USAPA on the other hand is a big thorn in everyones side and not very popular with United and it's pilots so that may prove to be another blow the east pilots can throw at the company.

I truly detest seeing anyone lose employment during a merger, but the big difference between pilots & f/a's and the 'rest of the airline' is that non-flight crew can 'lateral' into another company (in a decent economy, I know....) but flight crew start over again at the bottom, both seniority and pay-wise.
Best of luck to us all.

Errr...Station agents would start at the bottom as well. Same thing for mechanics. Everyone, really, Except for management.

You do have a point that it could possibly be a first step in dismantling US in preparation of part 2 which would be the end goal of a merger with CO. (I personally do not hope that's the case for our sake and for the sake of US employees) Or it could just be ploy to get CO to the table.

But as I said, our MEC has gone public with the statement that no meaningful merger talks are underway with US. And this is where I disagree with you. Since the Master Chairman holds a seat on the board of directors, you are correct in thinking that he or she could not divulge any information with regard to a merger if one was actually being talked about in the board room. However, the Master Chairman can certainly say what is not being talked about. You can't get in legal hot water for talking about something that is not happening. So when they come out with "no comment," or worse... say nothing at all, that's when I get worried.

The fact is that our MEC has a proven track record of being VERY careful of what they say publicly, and rarely even make public statements like the one I posted. When they do, they have historically been 100% accurate. Thet were very specific in saying that the story has been confirmed as being speculative. So believe who and what you want. I for one will check back in about a month. But for those hoping for a UA/USmerger, I wouldn't hold my breath. It just doesn't make sense.

I think this is going to involve all three, US/UA/CO ..... CO and US have a lot of east coast overlap, just like US and DL did when US try to buy Delta. Parker and the other CEO's want to squeeze capacity out of the industry to gain pricing power. There are many scenario that could involve all three to accomplish it. All lead to fewer employees needed ...

There are lots of reason many of us might agree that we don't want a UA/US merger and that any such merger simply doesn't make sense.. but how many times has there been an attempt to merge them? I'm loosing count. Is this the 3rd or 4th time? It evidently makes sense to someone, and who ever "they" are, they never asked me for my opinion. Our opinions notwithstanding, Union thoughts on the matter are little more than posturing for negotiations.

This record has been played over and over again!! After CO and UA finally merge, we at US will be talking about merging with AA. Don't think it's ever going to happen the way most of us would like. So, after this happy post, have another cup of coffee and enjoy the ride.
