US Airways CEO faces cloudy skies in integrating airlines, building worker loyalty

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

By Dan Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

US Airways Chief Executive Officer Doug Parker is back in Pittsburgh today, trying to earn the trust of his employees.

In new campaign, US Airways hopes you 'fly with us'.

It is clear he still has work to do.

The airline continues to cut flights at Pittsburgh International Airport, where next month it will drop below 200 daily departures -- a far cry from the 542 it had in 2001. And recently it angered employees at an RIDC Park West operations center when about 30 were given furlough notices despite Mr. Parker's comment on a Nov. 9 Web cast that the company did not plan to furlough employees.

Could he be the one??

Hey guys, especially you eternal hateful ones....I think you should give the guy a chance before you judge him so quickly. He has a proven track record with America West and you never know who the next CEO will be. ]

Enjoy working under this guy while you can, because when the next guy steps in, you never know what you're going to get. We got stuck with Franke for 10 years.

I think we know: Wolfe, Seagull, et al. We also know what a bowl of crap a merger is...the destroyer of airlines. Old U's problems were systemic of botched mergers (3 profitable companies + merger = buckets of cr@p.). Mr. Parker has not displayed ANY leadership at all, to the East. It is running itself, same stuff, different day. It appears this ship is rudderless and Mr. Parker is WAY OVER HIS HEAD. I hope he proves me wrong, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As a side note; how many East pilots did not sell their stock on day one? What a show of confidence...

You people are so impatient. We have been one for less than 2 months. If any of you bother to read any company information...oh, I'm sorry you may remember it as kool aid in your bitter vocabulary..you would know that major intergration changes will take place the beginning of the year.

Same safety announcement video
Same safety card
Same inflight movies/music
Same inflight magazine
Push for same inflight service...this takes time, kids
AWA brand phased out
Painting of ac
Closing of CCY offices
New uniforms introduced in 2006

What the hell do you want? What IS your beef? These things take time, but I feel DP is listening. Do you still get a paycheck?

Remember...It took 3 years to change Piedmont over to USAir. AWA is quickly changing things over, but some things take time. Just do the best YOU can and let the new company leaders do their thing.

your love affair with this guy kills me...his primary responsibilty lies not with the tweedle dee "dougie cult" but the sharehoders and creditors...anything else just don't cut it.

I understand the pessimism and frustration well. I know USA employees from having flown with two different Express airlines and I know the IAM from TWA. Years of being beaten-down leave no room for optimism. Nothing short of a visionary leader can turn around the attitudes of disgruntled employees. DP can be considered above-average but he's gonna need step it up a whole lot for this thing to succeed. To be a successful LCC all the employees need to be motivated and enthusiastic. Both East and West could use some help in that regard.

None of this explains the ignorance of those that bash Parker without even having given him a chance. Like I said before..he has a track record with AWA and the employees of that company. Of course not everybody is happy, never will be, but the majority are and thats the only thing you can use to try and understand where this man stands.

I'll give the guy a chance, but before he does any more Town Hall meetings, he needs to do his homework about the station where he's speaking. "I don't know" may be a reasonable answer when you are blind-sided by a question, but a room full of suits who all say, "I don't know" or "I'll get back to you on that" does not instill a lot of confidence in the work groups, especially when the questions have been standing inquiries for a number of years.

Maybe he's tired from flying all over the system. Actually, I have a great idea all of the sudden: Hey, Doug! Why don't you rest up, come back to PIT and work with us for a week? I'll even give you a parka to wear while you work in the Arctic with us. It'll be a "Parker Parka." You can be one of the agents and figure out where we're coming from and what our issues are, especially the Express agents at PSA, who have never seen Keith Houk even once at the station. Besides, it's an easy step to take before you consider doing the same thing at a larger US East hub (say, for example, PHL) Want to earn trust and respect? Put yourself in our shoes for a week. I know I'd respect you more, and "I don't know" might become just a memorable phrase instead of a corporate mantra.

Gee, can't even have a little fun without being accused of being a blind supporter of "Dougie". If you actually read my post the picture I was trying to paint was Yoda warning Parker that our merger wasn't going to be easy and to be careful of the "darkside". Fill in the blank. "Darkside" is many different things to different people. For some it's corporate greed, for others it's the unabashed stubborness of union leadership...get the picture? So you see this post doesn't "support Dougie", it merely pokes a little fun at the situation at hand. You know what "kills me" Dell? My post clearly is having a little fun....but yet you didn't get it? I failed. What a disappointment.
