According to the Flight Department, during the past two weeks US Airways has progressed from last in the industry with about 70% of its flights arriving S:14, to near the top of the industry with arrival performance over 84% thus far for the month of May.

The two percentage points by which the company trails the first place carrier represents only 32 less delays spread over 1,400 mainline flights per day.

Bob,

Thru May 22nd, 7.2 for mainline and 12.9 for Express (the goal is 3.0 for each).

Personally, I break the other numbers down into 2 catagories:

1. Greatly affected by employee effort - fleet launch & turn performance - are considerably improved.

2. Those that can be greatly affected by external factors like weather - departures & arrivals - also significantly improved.

Neither is 100% due to either employees or other factors, but #1 leans one way and #2 leans the other.

Bob -

Not to knock your post, because you are aboslutely correct about the issue of PAWOBs, but running an operation that arrives/departs ontime leads to LESS PAWOBs. Here is a case in point:

From theHub:

The key thing I was trying to point out was that compare April 15th to May 27th.

Mainline on time arrival performance went from 76.3% to 83.7% while month to date PAWOBs dropped from 9.6 to 7.3.

Express on time arrival performance went from 68.5% to 81.4% while month to date PAWOBS dropped from 18.8 to 12.9.

On time flights increase the likelyhood that your bags will make the same connection that you do. While we have a considerable way to go to improve our PAWOB performance, by running the airline on time, we have also increased our PAWOB performance.

Bob....

I think you may be taking this post by A320 way out of context. Personally, we have all talked about how CCY fails to recognize the performance of the employees. The improvements in performance shouldn't be attributed to anything CCY did - besides saying "Hey, we need flights to push on time." - they are a direct result of the employees efforts. Any posting of the result of those efforts should be viewed as a reinforcement of the job each person is doing to contribute to the bottom line result. I don't believe it was A320's intention to puff up the big wigs in CCY, but to show the employees that their efforts have made a huge difference and that we are extremely close to regaining our spot at the top of te list again.

If you fail to recognize the employee efforts are making a difference and take the focus off the ball, then you get what happened this winter. The poor performance is a result of someone taking their eye off the ball and not reinforcing (to the managers) that we need to refocus on OTP. That is what happened with the May 1 OTP campaign.

Please don't look at A320's comments as being a back pat to the folks in CCY, they haven't achieved these numbers, the front line men and women have and deserve to have everyone gloat about there improvements.

Lets also not forget that we are headed into the better weather months.. You will see an improvement over all of the Airlines OTP.. Its all relative..

As the weather gets worse is when US Airways operations start to suffer.. Not when its sunny and clear blue skies.

PB is correct on the overhead bag thing---had this sweet little lady ask me to put her bag in the overhead---JC---it almost broke my back getting it up there. No more of that for me---!

Piney,

"denial" and "foolish" are words that only you can use and get away with! Bravo.

Phoenix

"Also the "Heel" and "Dog Ate my homework" comments are not intended to offend my fellow poster Dog Wonder. Last time I mentioned the "Dog ate my homework" excuse he "Barked" at me!"

ARF ARF!

You have the sympathy of tens of thousands of people who are (or were) employees who have paid in spades to purchase the ubiquitous and perennial promises that are written on cocker spaniel spit infused parchment.

Welcome to our club.

Best in Eight Years (from theHub)

With month-end May performance ahead of goal in several performance areas, US Airways and US Airways Express employees have made the first month of the “All Together. On Time.â€￾ initiative a major success.

Mainline had 65.3 percent of all flights depart on time, which was 0.3 percentage points ahead of goal. Mexico and Guatemala led all stations in on-time departure performance, each reporting 96.8 percent for the month. Mexico also achieved the best departure performance within five minutes of schedule, reporting 100 percent for the month.

At US Airways Express, on-time departures were at 74.8 percent, which was 4.8 points ahead of goal.

These systemwide collective efforts led the way for 84.3 percent of our mainline departures to arrive within 14 minutes of scheduled arrival time, which was 0.3 points ahead of goal. This is the best monthly arrival performance since March 2004, as well as the best arrival performance for the month of May since 1997.

“To have the best May arrival performance in eight years -- in the first month of our on-time initiative -- should make us all proud,â€￾ said Donna Paladini, vice president of Customer Service. “It is especially impressive, given that a primary runway in Charlotte was closed for two days, creating a major challenge for our operations. Now our challenge is to continue this upward trend. It’s what will return us to the top of the airline industry and win back our customers.â€￾

Note mentioned here, but for Piney,
Baggage mainline 8.2/ MTD 7.2/ Goal 3.0
express 10.9/ MTD 12.4/ Goal 3.0

This is as good a place as any to put this.....

The DOT issued their June Consumer Air Travel Report, which covers operations for the month of April. Here's what the Hub had to say:

June DOT Report

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued its June 2005 Air Travel Consumer Report, covering the month of April 2005. Although the DOT ranks 19 airlines in its monthly report, US Airways compares itself to eight other network and major low-cost carriers.

In April on-time arrivals, US Airways ranked seventh in its peer group with 80 percent of its flights arriving on time. In this category, US Airways ranked ahead of AirTran Airways and JetBlue Airways. By comparison, in March 68.5 percent of US Airways flights arrived on time.

With 10.91 reports of mishandled bags per 1,000 customers, US Airways ranked last among the major network carriers and primary low-cost competitors in this category. But the number of reports declined from 12.27 per 1,000 customers in March.

In other April results, US Airways ranked ninth in consumer complaints, with 1.27 per 100,000 passengers. In March, there were 1.39 consumer complaints per 100,000 passengers.

In order to improve its operations, US Airways unveiled its “All Together. On Time.â€￾ initiative on May 3. For the month of May, 2005, arrivals within 14 minutes of schedule reached their highest level in 14 months and their highest level for May in eight years. May was the first month of the “All Together. On Time.â€￾ initiative. The DOT will release its May report in July.

The actual report is here.

I hope the rest of June does not go like today, or else May will look like nirvana. Getting from one side of NC to the other took 3 hours (on a plane). CLT was a mess, and it looks like everything south (including FLL) was too.
