Found on another forum. I will just put it here. With the Carter bashing in full swing by Cruz and Christie, this should be known.
"Reagan, having successfully used dog whistle politics to tap the intolerance and bigotry of Conservative Democrats and the Religious Right, came into office on the tails of Carter successfully negotiating the release of the Iran hostages. Further, Paul Volcker at the Fed, having successfully tamed inflation, lowered interest rates giving Reagan a HUGE gift. And what did Reagan do? He lowered taxes for everyone, with the lion's share to the rich, while bloating up the DOD's budget. This was the equivalent of Dubya giving tax cuts during wartime and deficit wildfires followed. Reagan was unable to tame the wildfire even after 11 tax increases, one of which was a payroll tax that impacted the middle and lower classes tremendously. He left office with a historical (for the time) deficit AND a fast track in the increasing gap between the rich and everyone elseleading to the great inequality we see today. THAT makes Reagan, in my opinion, the worse president in our modern history, followed by Dubya...
...on HW Bush, he got stuck with Reagan's mess, and he had to raise taxes to prevent the economy from going over the cliff. He sacrificed a second term for the sake of the country, as did Carter. And BOTH were lambasted for doing so."
