You two are splitting hairs over the difference between the meaning of the word control versus influence.
A sitting President has a great deal of "Control" over certain things, really important things. Of often greater importance is the amount of "influence" he can exert.
A President "Controls" who gets nominated to the Supreme Court yet has no real control or influence regarding the rulings issued.
Case on point would be dyed in the wool Republican President Eisenhower appointed Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, taking what he thought was a conservative judge that would issue rulings favorable to his party. WRONG! The Warren Court is widely regarded as the most Liberal Court in US History.
