Not a shocker. I'm curious to see where the UA & CO merger goes given the heavy resistance to this deal.
For those that are more informed than myself -

DEN is an exception to the LGA perimiter rule. Do you have to have special "DEN" slots like DCA, or can anybody fly there? I'm guessing since SW does not fly LGA-DEN, you do need a special slot, but I am just curious. I'm certain US could make money flying LGA-DEN. We codeshare on almost every UA flight in DEN so pax could connect almost anywhere out west.

Can US and DL just lease the slots to each other?

Also on a brighter note:

So it looks by the SEC filing, that both Delta and USAirways will head to the Appeals Court and fight it there.

is this good news or bad news

Good question. US has two options now - try to make something of LGA, or sell the slots to whomever wants them. Since we closed the LGA and BOS bases, I am not holding my breath for option 1.

Funny USAirways did the same in EWR back in 94. They made a Sweetheart deal with CO for the Eastern Terminal in LGA.
Just by plain History, US puts Thier Tale between their legs and runs. Hundreds of Millions Lost because of Incompetent Management over the years.......

My guess is that instead of the swap, they do a lease-swap, wherein DL leases the LGA slots from US and vice versa for DCA. Nothing prevents them from doing that. Remember that NW owned most of the DCA slots that US used which they in turn got from EA.

Selling the LGA slots just to get rid of them, or to raise some cash was never the intent here. While US would have lost something in LGA, they would have gained more market share in DCA. If this deal can't come to pass, US has little choice but to make LGA work for them. Less Express flying and more Mainline would be a good place to start. I wouldn't give an inch if this or any other deal would benefit SW in ANY way.

How is it good news if the LGA operation is losing money?

Lemme understand this... Corporate involuntarily transferred all those those people from a few months ago to DCA with an expected build-up in flights because the DL swap and now those flights aren't coming? Yoo-boy... That's going to make for a below average day when people are being told to move to another new station in less than a year as DCA is now overstaffed.

So Sympathizes Jester.

US could just take 24 DCA slots while DL can take 75 LGA slots since the DOT/FAA have no problem that that few amount of slots. Or they can just simply lease out 42 DCA slots to US and 125 LGA slots to DL since the government cannot stop leases. They can only stop LGA slot purchases. They cannot stop DCA slot purchases either so US can just "buy" 42 DCA slots, NRT & GRU and lease 125 LGA slots to DL. There are 3 ideas that they can use to get this done and thumb their noses at the DOT who seemed to be very unreasonable by only allowing LCCs to purchase gates to get this deal approved.
I hope DL & US beat the government.
