Does this mean American will go ahead with the ORD-HKG route that has been talked about in the past, or will there only be an AA code on CX operated flights?

This might be a good time to send a 777 to HKG once a day due to current excess capacity and the fact that the Asian economy is holding up much better than U.S.

I tend to agree, with no pilot contract and no provisions to fly that length of time in the current contract, I would have to say no AA metal.

It's good news for AA. What it will do is put a hurt on some of UAL and NWA's revenues. The US gov has just allowed a 3rd carrier(AA/Cathy/Dragon) into the Hong Kong/Chinese market.

With AA's code share's with JAL and now Cathy it all but knocks DAl out of Asia. Other than KAL they are the odd man out. This only forces DAL to put more pressure on Washington to approve it NWA CAL codeshare. Or could this be Washington's way of telling AA it's been approved and here's your bone?

I think that AA would love to fly our metal to Hong Kong. They will not hesitate to set up more overseas maintenance on our aircraft to save money. A 777 B check would cost AA peanuts in China vs here in the states.

I just came back from vacation in Asia and non-reved out of NRT to Dallas on 176, the new second frequency. The ground personnel there are getting vibes that it is going daily by next summer.

In started in 1987 DFW-NRT brieflt to KIX too. Then SJC and SEA to NRT. In 1998 it added ORD to NRT. Finally in 2002 JFK-NRT with LAX to NRT coming in 2003. WITH JFK, ORD, DFW, LAX AND SJC AA now offers service from all regions of the country to Japan. If AA is to become a Asian force the eay it does South America and Europe then it has to servce Hong Kong.

UA(they did pre 9/11) doesn't serve LAX-HKG so that is an option. It should be possible with a 777, SIA is operating Las Vegas -HKG nonstop. ORD and DFW are the 2 other obvious gateways to HKG. Service to other points like Seoul and Osaka should be considered as well.
