US Airways to shrink mainline fleet

US Airways expects its mainline fleet to have declined by 14% to 354 aircraft by the end of this year, compared with the 411 aircraft America West Airlines and US Airways operated before their merger in September last year.

Is this a new development or has this been the plan all along?

The artical is misleading. We have already parked these planes. No further downsizing is scheduled right now.

It's about time that US Airways prepares to phase-out 122 oldest Boeing 737 jets. About 82 B737-300s and 40 B737-400s jets. Doesn't need to repaint new livery those B737 equipment and save money.

Prepare to get more new planes for Embraer 190 and Airbus A350-800 widebody jet in the future.

Actually he is wrong.

Some of HP's fleet are scheduled to be returned still and under the terms of the agreement with GECAS, they can still demand a certain # of planes be returned.

Someone said "for now." As I understand it, up until One year from the merger (that would be Sep 06) the company can reduce the fleet ANOTHER 10%. But most of the leases have been wrapped up, and I don't really see a big park job. Maybe a sale, but who would want a bunch of round dial 73's? Greeter.

No the article is right on target. The fleet is sitting at 380 aircraft and will be reduced by another 20 or so. The mainline fleet is going to be reduced to 354 aircraft.

Are guys talking about the "COMBINED" fleet or the US Airways East fleet? I sat in a meeting with Parker and he stated the fleet reductions in the East were over for now. He also stated than if in 1 year our fleet count was the same or less something had " gone terribly wrong". I think the article is getting the numbers twisted a bit.

Sure, it's old news for those who followed the Ch 11 proceedings very closely, but it was revealed in the 10-K last week and that makes it very newsworthy for the rest of the world. That's why FlightGlobal.com did the story. The fleet is gonna get smaller this year and is thus newsworthy.

Whatever happened to that old rumor that FedEx was just falling all over themselves trying to get our 737-400's to convert to freighters and replace their 727's?

That rumor was a "sure thing" since the 737 performance engineer left US to go to FX.

Probably along the lines of the 3 attempted UAL mergers and that oh so near FLA crewbase! Best. Greeter.

This is in fact, fact😉. US Airways can reduce the fleet size, but it has to be done by Sept. 30-06 (12 months after coming out of CH 11).

This ought to be interesting!

Re Parker said: Watch what they do, not what they say!

PS As an aside, why would US Airways add seats domistically? Are we suddenly swimming in $$$$? Adding E190's, parking B737's...reality sucks 😉

Gee, Let's think about that...........A chance to dump A/C and Lea$e$??? Now what do you think will happen???
