US Airways expanding its fleet

An occasional feature on US Airways as it integrates with America West.

Time to Expand

After years of cutbacks, US Airways now says it's looking to expand its fleet and hopes to add a few planes to allow new flights to Europe. In a newsletter sent to employees over the weekend, the airline confirmed it is trying to acquire three Boeing 757s from ATA Airlines. That acquisition could allow it to add three new European cities to the 13 currently served. The 757s would not fly to Europe, but would free up other aircraft for trans-Atlantic service.
"We're not only looking at ATA's aircraft, but we're looking at a variety of ways to expand our Europe flying," said Andrew Nocella, the airline's senior vice president of scheduling and planning, in the newsletter.
Spokesman Philip Gee said the airline could find out this week if it gets the three planes. Service to new European cities would be from the airline's Philadelphia hub, not Charlotte, he said.
After last fall's merger with America West, US Airways now operates 373 mainline aircraft -- fewer than US Airways did before the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

I would not count to much on expansion, we will be still parking most of the 737's if not all of them, with only a handful of E-190 for replacments. Minimum fleet size will be determined one year after exiting bankruptcy as per the transition agreement with the company. I hope they do but I would doubt you see real expansion.

Fleet projection

According to the above, your info is incorrect. Could you name your source? A big part of the aircraft being returned already have.
Was told in ground school 737's would most likely be phased out over the next few years, AWA has 22 EFIS 737'that don't match the rest of the fleet. The E-190 should be flying on the property by November, (should be announced next month initial order to be 25) again just information from the training center

Yeah, the AWA 737s are a motley mixed bag of second-hand and new-purchase aircraft. They don't have ovens and they only have 8 First seats, plus they don't even all match each other in internal configuration due to the different places they were acquired from.
