NOt only that, communities give Walmart tax breaks that they NEVER gave to the small businessman who built a business in that community, but may well go under because of Walmart. Walmart prices are not lower in the grand scheme of things. It sickens me to know that even though I will not set foot in a Walmart, my tax dollars have gone to subsidize more that one in my community.
And Wal-Mart is under investigation for bribing officials in four countries.

Tennessee, Georgia , Alabama and Mississippi?
Big differenct there xUT...when my local grocery decided to open a deli, my city/county/state gave them zero, zip, nada tax breaks and incentives. Walmart on the other hand gets tax breaks on the property, and in some cases is permitted to KEEP a portion of the sales tax collected. ANd Walmart's mode of operation is that once the tax abatement ends, they will look for an extension and if they don't get it - build another store in another community just blocks down the street. All mega stores do the same thing. When your local supermarket decided to open a deli, it just killed local delis, when your local supermarket decided to open a bakery, it just killed local bakeries.
Mega and Super stores kill local competition. That's how they make money. To add salt to the wound, they are subsidized by by the city/county/state to do so at the demise of many local businesses.
In my city, there is a push to open new downtown local businesses yet they give the upper hand to the mega stores.
I can walk into a Safeway and there are concessions that offer bakery, deli, hot Chinese food, Japanese food,... etc...
How can a small business compete?
It's not just wally world, it's Costco, Safeway, etc...
Just my 2 cents...
You can put down Wal Mart all day long but the root of the problem is local pol's drooling over tax base income for them. They let WM in for low rates and reap it back in local income taxes from the workers.
There was a proposal here some ten or so years back to put an indoor mile racetrack for Nascar type racing and other venues due to the roof. It would have been the only track around some five or more state area. Would have been a real good job venture for the tristate area. The local pols wanted this and that this and that, finally the principles told them to Eff off and left the area. Happened again with a horse track and casino north of here. What a bunch of maroons.
