NOt only that, communities give Walmart tax breaks that they NEVER gave to the small businessman who built a business in that community, but may well go under because of Walmart. Walmart prices are not lower in the grand scheme of things. It sickens me to know that even though I will not set foot in a Walmart, my tax dollars have gone to subsidize more that one in my community.

All mega stores do the same thing. When your local supermarket decided to open a deli, it just killed local delis, when your local supermarket decided to open a bakery, it just killed local bakeries.
Mega and Super stores kill local competition. That's how they make money. To add salt to the wound, they are subsidized by by the city/county/state to do so at the demise of many local businesses.
In my city, there is a push to open new downtown local businesses yet they give the upper hand to the mega stores.
I can walk into a Safeway and there are concessions that offer bakery, deli, hot Chinese food, Japanese food,... etc...
How can a small business compete?
It's not just wally world, it's Costco, Safeway, etc...
Just my 2 cents...

AA got tax incentives to open the res center in Tucson back in 1991. Cities try and entice companies to open in their communities in the hopes of getting jobs for it's citizens.

There can be good and bad that comes with that. Wal-Mart should probably not be viewed as long term employment. oNot meant to be a career move for most of the people who work there. Unfortunately given the unemployment rate right now, people will take what ever work they can get and Wal-Mart will take advantage of it.

Wal-Mart does what they do well. Their prices are cheap so people shop there. I have not set foot in one for years and refuse to because I do not like the stores. I prefer to shop at Costco. They treat thier employees very well Until people make a conscious decison to make their opinions known with their dollars, Wal-Mart will continue their practices.

I do not care for Wal-Mart but it is a free country and it's up to the people to make the choice.

C'MON fellas. Lighten up on the 'Good ol' Boys' from Bentonville Arkansas will ya' !

Hey, speaking of Walmart,..the B O SS is going to make W-M an 'offer they can't refuse' with regard to the new GUN CONTROL (coming to a state near you SOON), by playing them AGAINST the F'n...N R A.

If I was that NRA Douche-Bag Wayne La Pierre, I'd be keeping a tube of K-Y handy ! : )

Big differenct there xUT...when my local grocery decided to open a deli, my city/county/state gave them zero, zip, nada tax breaks and incentives. Walmart on the other hand gets tax breaks on the property, and in some cases is permitted to KEEP a portion of the sales tax collected. ANd Walmart's mode of operation is that once the tax abatement ends, they will look for an extension and if they don't get it - build another store in another community just blocks down the street.

They did that here in KC. The Kansas side of the state line is made up of many "bedroom communites" There is a Walmart in a little town called Roeland Park. The tax break Walmart got ended and Walmart is closing that store and moving to a new one less than a mile away in a little town called Mission. With tax abatements. That's why I say - even though I will never set foot in a Walmart, my tax money still goes to support them. And that is something that isn't factored into the "low prices everyday" mantra.

You can put down Wal Mart all day long but the root of the problem is local pol's drooling over tax base income for them. They let WM in for low rates and reap it back in local income taxes from the workers.

There was a proposal here some ten or so years back to put an indoor mile racetrack for Nascar type racing and other venues due to the roof. It would have been the only track around some five or more state area. Would have been a real good job venture for the tristate area. The local pols wanted this and that this and that, finally the principles told them to Eff off and left the area. Happened again with a horse track and casino north of here. What a bunch of maroons.

Here's the thing dell..in many cases Walmart gets to KEEP a portion of the sales taxes. Mom and Pop shops aren't given that luxury. So my tax dollars are helping put Mom and Pop out of buisness and I don't like it. And if those "maroons" had half a brain, they would look at the REAL impact Walmart has on them. For example, since Walmart employees are paid so little that they can't afford a health insurance plan, many turn to the local PUBLIC health department...health care paid for with YOUR tax dollars.
