I noticed a few United 737s at ORD with "United Shuttle" livery. With some, it was "shuttle" in cursive. I thought that the United shuttle referred to the LAX-SFO route and it hasn't been called that for years. Has it been that long since those planes have been repainted? Or is there some kind of "Shuttle" operated by UAL involving ORD?

Old paint jobs.....I don't know what the cycle is for painting planes, but those must be due.

Ag:

The United Shuttle 737's underwent 3 revisions to its paint scheme during Shuttle's 7 year life. The planes flew exclusively up and down the westcoast from UA's SFO and LAX hubs. The first scheme was the cursive Shuttle by United in blue writing against an all white fuselage. The fleet was later repainted to the dreary mainline gray, but with the Shuttle by United writing retained in white. The last revision dropped the Shuttle by United name and cursive graphic and was renamed United Shuttle with the updated United script in black. The Shuttle product was discontinued after September 11 and the aircraft were incorporated into mainline flying. That is why you will see the Shuttle aircraft all over United's domestic network. I am not sure if retaining the 737's are in United's long range plans, but stay tuned for a new corporate identity to be unveiled within the next few weeks. Good riddance to that battleship gray...

Never strictly up and down the coast, as, for example, LAX/SFO-PHX and LAX-TUS were also shuttle routes. Toward the end (2000-01) Shuttle flights had crept into the DEN hub as well. In that time DEN spokes to cities like LAS/PHX/TUS/SLC/ABQ has also been turned over to Shuttle.
Still fairly common to see the paint schemes out here in the west. The later, gray ones, anyway.
Haven't seen the original white Shuttle scheme in a while.

Deja vu anyone? LAX-SFO-PHX, flights to DEN, ... sounds familiar, but using an Airbus with a three letter name in big giant letters -- "Tie", "Ned", just can't remember what that's called now. 😉

PIT sees this livery ptetty much every day, so they have crept eastward. I've recently seen the white/blue (my fave), so they are still around.
