I thought they were IAM but could be mistaken.

We were TWU BEFORE we went independent with IFFA. The boys at the TWU had no idea what we wanted as f/as. Due to the different work schedules, flight time vs a 40 hour week, no retirement (or very little as f/as didn't have 30 and 40 year careers), we wanted to control our own destiny. IFFA was born and we negotiated several industry leading contracts. Our pay in the '83 contract was not far fron todays AA pay. The IAM was "fussy" because they had planned for us to stay independent for the required 2 years, and merge with them. We were doing just fine and then Carl came to visit, raped our assets, stole our future, and the flight attendants got tired of fighting. Enter "big daddy", the IAM, with promises of unity, strength and clout...the rest is history. They have bungled every important issue we faced. SCOPE, court cases, not filing, filing in the wrong court, and when it comes down to the real issue..it was all about the dues. When we brought in the IAM, our representation was not trained, had no experience, and it was a "one General Chairperson show". This General Chair did very well with $100.000 + a year salary, plus expenses, and a sweet amount of contribution to a "special" retirement fund. Things that make you shake your head and say, "Hummmmmmm".

AA stews left the TWU in the early 70's for much the same reasons.

Actually, IFFA and the APFA "held hands" as we ventured into the independent mode. Both were chartered in '76. First IFFA, the the APFA. The former partnership makes what happened during the acquisition even more unfortunate.
