Dear TWU Members Who Are American Airlines Fleet Service Employees:

We are writing to you about an urgent matter that may seriously affect the ability of both your Local and your International Union to effectively represent you in collective bargaining with American Airlines. In the last day or so, it has been brought to our attention that certain individuals at certain TWU Locals have been circulating a message that TWU members working in American Fleet Service should refuse overtime and D1, and that they should work strictly “to book.”

Please be informed that any such campaign is directly contrary to TWU directives. TWU and the Locals affected have instructed TWU-represented Fleet Service employees that they should continue to work in accord with routine, and that there should be no action to disrupt American operations. Through this writing, we are providing this same directive to all American Fleet Service employees.

As a TWU member, you should recognize that a job action such as what appears to be sought in the referenced campaign may well be found to violate both our contract and the Railway Labor Act, and could subject your Local and the International to court injunctions and—in the event those orders are not appropriately obeyed—serious financial penalties. This would seriously weakening the ability of the union to make the gains that you are hoping for at the bargaining table: the union’s energies and resources would be diverted into court actions and fighting against possible financial penalties, rather than being focused on making collective bargaining gains.

Remember: anyone who participates in a job action would more likely be playing the role of someone who weakens TWU rather than supports it. DO NOT participate in any job action; instead participate in supporting your union. We strongly urge you to continue to work in your usual way and not to engage in any refusal to work overtime or D1 or any slowdown.

This message on the eve of Labor Day weekend is aimed at assuring that we strengthen our union, not through job actions that will merely result in court actions, but through appropriate unifying actions to obtain the best agreement we can.

Fraternally,

Robert Gless
Deputy Director
AA System Coordinator

I would like to get some feedback on this matter,........Thanks

Whatever you do, don't weaken the twu! LMFAO

As a mechanic he should know better than to tell people to not work by he book. I could not write such a letter to my members, I would be violating my privileges as an A&P mechanic if I put such a letter out to mechanics. Which book should they not work by? The contract? Well as a union official he should demand that they work by that book. Company regs? QAM? It boggles my mind that a union official would tell members not to work by the book. What if someone gets hurt because because they were told not to work by the book? What he should have said was that he expected them to continue to work by the book as they are always expected to work by the book but they should not engage in any unlawful activity such as a concerted effort to not work OT since that may be considered a job action however each individual has the right to decide for themselves whether or not to volunteer to work overtime. The company does have the right to force OT if they fail to get enough volunteers and if forced you must comply.

The letter needs clarification.
What is D1?

seriously weakening the ability of the union to make the gains that you are hoping for at the bargaining table

How does it get any weaker?
Is that possible?

Thanks Bob, I could not said it better my self. A D1 is the next (Full Time) FSC that has the training to enter the load to close out a flight. This is done when a crew chief is not avail. and that person gets CC pay for doing this. And just a side note I did catch a hint of "not working by the book is ok" in this letter.

Yep - that was rich, wasn't it?

Even though 95% of what I do doesn't even involve their blessed book, I still had to take the "cover the company's ass" computer based training, instructing those taking the training and subsequent test that deviation from any written instructions is not a Kosher thing to do under penalty of fines, jail time, and loss of license (I guess I can give up my HAM license). The instructions of Booby Gless are contrary to those of the FFA and the company, therefore, he can take a flying #### at a rolling donut.

Evidently, the international turds aren't required to keep up their CBT and other training so, as is typical international style, mouths were opened before facts were known and this letter came out.

I wonder if he realizes what he advocates is a direct violation of FFA rules?

How about the union supporting its members who may be finally coming together as a unit! After all,at our meetings our Pres say we need to be strong and united!

I would like to ask Mr. Gless if he believes in slavery. Because if he is saying that I no longer have control over my life that’s what that is. Also I believe his statement not to work by the book puts our Union in much graver peril as we would now be liable for anyone getting hurt or God forbid Killed because they were not following the "book" of safety regs. that is meant to keep us safe. I for one am appalled that he would say that publicly. Our Union and our Members are not in the habit of disobeying the safety rules that the company has put in place to protect its employees, property, and customers. Shame on you Mr. Gless.

Oh heaven forbid the almighty twu be subject to financial penalties. I`ve been subject to "financal penalties" for the last 8 years! Weaken the twus ability to represent? Seriously, you said that with a straight face.

For all you FSC's out there, perhaps you should cast a vote for Mr. Gless, he is looking out for your best intrests?

Someone needs to remind Mr. Gless we just had one of our men crushed by a belt loader, or what about the guy that got wrapped up in the nose gear in SJU, the Eagle guy that walked into the prop of an ATR. The list goes on and on.....

Hey Frank last time I checked FFA was Future Farmers of America. You must be a redneck that works in Tulsa. Violation of FAA.

I don't believe Frank made an error, I believe he had it exactly right.
