Now, sky...it's important to be precise. The article does not say that AMR is the worst company for 2010. It says that AMR is the most hated company for 2010. That's an entirely different achievement. A company can be a terrible company--no profit, major stockholder losses--but still be loved. Most hated? You have to really work to win that. There are so many worthy candidates.

Can't wait for the 'Company Defenders' to post what the article really says!!

I agree. US Airways (Scareways) or UAL are much worse in my opinion, particularly UAL has abysmal customer service and the most disgruntled employees. AT&T is much worse IMHO.
And you think the banks are bad Jim....

How can that be??????????
They screwed their employees in bankruptcy....I thought all those people would be so happy to just have jobs...

Boy was I wrong!

So by your logic AA employees should be glad they didn't get hosed in BK and enjoy their industry leading pay, benefits, and work rules. UAL and PM-NW are the absolute worst when it comes to customer service. I've gone to great lengths to avoid fights with former NW aircraft and crews on DL and avoid UA at all costs for this among other reasons.

Industry leading pay? WRONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG! Mechanics are on the lower tier in the wages department
Benefits? That we pay more and more for each year? WRONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!
And yes,,we still have a pension...Which, since it is based on the best 4 of the last 10 years of earnings, has also declined.
Paycuts equal reduction in pension earnings!

I don't know how long you've been around or interested in internal airline issues...But since 1983, AA has changed the game..They have basically gotten bankruptcy type contracts without bankruptcy.
The list is endless!

Its to bad they didnt include employee moral in the equation AMR could have got what they wanted.. to be a number one airline but on the wrong number one list
And who says performance and pay have nothing to do with one another?
Must be those consulting firms. 😀

that would be "morale" and it was included in the calculations. It was noted that both AA and UA (the other airline participant on the list) had very high levels of distrust of mgmt by their employees.

As for the financial aspects, it once again should be noted that AMR employees DO NOT have any financial advantage over any of their network peers when it comes to the total amount of compensation AMR spends per employee.
You argue that you have your pensions - but most pension benefits were backed by the PBGC. Those that did lose pension benefits became creditors as part of that airline's BK - whcih resulted in stock in the reorganized company.

Finally, it should be noted that both DL and UA combined passed out more than $500M in profit sharing checks to their employees. How much did or will AMR employees receive for 2010?

The continued notion that AMR employees are better off than other airlines only keeps AMR employees from doing the hard work that is necessary to turn their airline around - and makes it easier for other airlines to continue to diminish AA's long-term viability.

To quote DL's former CEO, "The bleeding will stop. It always does."

Oh, the Irony. The OP whines in another thread about Eagle agents not reopening a flight on which he wanted to jumpseat and then posts an article explaining why AA is one of the most hated airlines. One of author's criteria? AA's many delays:

1. American Airlines
American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) made the list because of its dreadful customer service ratings and its poor on-time departure track record. These scores are surprising given that American is one of only a few large U.S. airlines that has not been involved in a merger or alliance – transactions that often lead to poor customer service. American’s stock has underperformed most of its peers during the last year. According to Glassdoor, only 36% of surveyed employees approve of CEO Gerard Arpey. American Airlines received a score of 63 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, the ninth-worst rating in 2010 out of 181 ranked companies. In the 2010 Travel and Leisure survey of best and worst airlines for delays, American Airlines was the worst large national carrier.

I thought I saw recently that AA's 2010 ontime percentage beat WN. At least AA appeared to score better than UAL:

13. United Airlines
In the 2010 American Customer Satisfaction Index, United received a score of 60, the lowest score received by any company across all industries – tied with Charter. According to a recent Consumer Reports article, United has a policy to reimburse consumers who find a lower fare for a flight they have already booked on United’s website by providing a voucher for a discount on the next flight booked by these customers. However, the airline charges a $150 fee if the consumer purchased a standard “nonrefundable” ticket. The company has a Glassdoor employee satisfaction rating of 2.1 out of 5, which is the worst of all the companies considered for our list. Before stepping down in October 2010 after the merger with Continental, former CEO Glenn Tilton had an approval rating of just 11%.

Funny how these dimwits repeated the CR "find" that fare rollovers require a change fee. Legacy airlines stopped free fare rollovers more than 10 years ago, and it's not unique to UAL.

Sorry, but I put more faith in TWAFA007's stock picks.

This is a guy who reviewed a bunch of websites to come up with this "shocking" study. Yet he's advertising some of the same crap that shows up here on AirlineForums.com (definitely a keystone of any company's advertising strategy) and runs it as a Wordpress blog...

Sure, what he's saying is probably common knowledge to you guys, but where's the methodology?

How did BP get ranked #14, while Toyota got ranked #3? Or maybe they're just in random order (which then means that perhaps AA isn't the most hated airline?....)

Toyota got a lot of bad press, but I didn't see people boycotting them, and their US built quality is still far higher than anything I've seen from one of the Shrinking Detroit Three. BP? Lots of media hype and "never let a good crisis go to waste" government interference. And the Gulf seems to have recovered. Must have been the healing power of Obummer walking on the beach (we know he walks on water, but why flaunt it?)

Flamebrand is a simple metric -- bad press. Could be something totally unrelated to customer satisfaction (e.g. being mentioned in an article with someone else?) and oddly shows Delta and Southwest with higher flame ratings than AMR at the moment (this changes hourly). You watch it from a PR standpoint to see if you need to do damage control. But it doesn't necessarily mean customers are coming at you with pitchforks.

ACSI? They at least have some history. And what their ranking shows is that AA is actually improving from years past...

http://www.theacsi.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=157&c=American+Airlines+&i=Airlines

The branding comparisons? Worthless in my opinion. Global brand recognition isn't necessarily correlated with customer satisfaction. Virgin America and Jetblue have low recognition outside of the US, where UA and AA have high recognition.

I don't follow most of the DOT rankings. They're relatively worthless as well. Every other station in the system could have perfect bag performance, and MIA's abysmal numbers would still put AA in last place. Since I don't check bags via MIA, I could care less... The only one I might look at is ontime dependability, and even those numbers get gamed a bit by things like schedule padding & some carriers not reporting 100% of the system.

It's Labors fault. This proves that the leaders of this once great airline are totally CLUELESS!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_bankruptcies

with all the Joint Businesses JL, IB, BA, and more to come. Jetblue.... the new Eagle in the wings.....you need a score card just to keep up.

The AA.com logo and millions of $$$ ads everywhere, ( in NYC there was even a entire NYC subway complete with Homeless people, covered in the AA.com logo ).

Pushing Orbitz and Expedia to the curb like garbage, now that's balls.

AMR is on a roll, so what............ if they're hated...........the airline business is cut-throat... As Uncle Carl would say if you need a friend...........get a dog.

AMR is laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm not a happy camper, but my tent is still up.

Hey guys we ( NYC, ORD, LAX, SFO ) really need a raise $$$, higher taxes..etc are killing us, how about you fat guys in DFW, OKC etc. taking a pay freeze this contract.... so we won't lose our homes.......that would make the company less " hated " in the long run too.
