America West Pilots Call for Return to Mediated Negotiations
PHOENIX — The pilots of America West Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), today requested that the National Mediation Board quickly resume mediated negotiations between the union and America West management for a new contract.
 
 
"Management has shown their commitment to compensating the government through the terms of their loan guarantee," said Eric Edwards, vice chairman of the America West unit of ALPA. "Now it is time for management to show the same commitment to the employees who have repeatedly sacrificed and invested in this airline by resuming good faith negotiations with us."
 
 
As part of the agreement with the Air Transportation Stabilization Board, America West committed to keeping labor costs to those outlined in the company’s seven-year business plan. "Management has an obligation to negotiate with the unions representing America West employees no matter what commitments they make to the government," Edwards said. The pilots believe that this condition imposed by the federal government could interfere with their collective bargaining rights and are exploring all legal options if those rights are restricted.
 
 
"The federal government, which is mediating our negotiations as a neutral third party, could become a major shareholder in the airline," Edwards said. "This could present a conflict of interest that would compromise our legal bargaining rights."
 
 
The pilots, who have been negotiating with America West since February 2000, lag considerably behind their counterparts at other major carriers despite having much more demanding schedules and constraints within which to fly. They are seeking to address the following issues in their negotiations:

• No pension and no retiree medical benefits;
• Scheduling enhancements that increase productivity while on duty and, at the same time, restore sensible rest requirements;
• A commitment from management to reverse the punitive attitude toward employees and comply with the collective bargaining agreement, which they have failed to do as evidenced by the more than 300 grievances filed by pilots in 2001 alone;
• Job protection measures that limit management’s intention to outsource the pilots’ flying careers to smaller carriers; and
•Hourly pay rates that are as much as 74 percent below major airline industry average.

Including the 1,800 America West pilots, ALPA represents 66,000 members at 46 airlines in the United States and Canada.

I find that comparison offensive to the memory of Benedict Arnold, who, regardless of his treachery, was actually a previously proven soldier with a spine, and thus not properly at ALL, in ANY way comparable to "heroically" T-shirted westie "spartans", "battle"-tested-"knights", "lords and ladies" and of course..."dire wolves".  Benedict Arnold was a traitor...but at least a man. Can that last be said of such as the below?

Stock purchases required for employment with the "airline"?....Seriously? I'd no idea. Who/what sort of supposed "pilots" would even consider ever accepting that? What completely and utterly pathetic idiots. Talk about an actual measurement of "can't even possibly get any job anywhere else".....Words just fail me. I'm starting to now understand the whole "spartan" thing. = Can't actually accomplish anything at all in life?...Here's your proper place in Fantasyland, so no worries...Just buy some stock, perhaps an "Integrity Matters" T-shirt and a "liberty"....umm..."patriot" tie to go with it. Heck! While "you'se" are at it: Why not pretend yourselves "soldiers" in some supposed "army"?  I don't know that I've ever met a more completely pathetic and utterly pitiful group of "wannabes" in my entire life.
 
Admittedly and intentionally provocative material "spartans". Wager's always open, and "you'se" sort bore me to tears, and have for nearly 7 years now, save for clinical interest and amusement. PM at "you'se" earliest convenience for terms and arrangements..."Pilots". 😉 I know "you'se" have some who qualify, and are certainly invited with appropriate respect, but the majority of "you'se" are just absurdly and unsupportably arrogant, pathetic jokes, and yes snapthis; you sit in that last category...I really can't find myself much impressed with how many "liberty" ties "you'se" buy. 🙂

snapthis? "You'se" are just another pathetic little wimp, and hardly either "noble" or at all scarce on a planet with 7 billion plus...and more's the pity for that. How nice that you went to "private schools" and had some dip-sheet corporate azzholes for parents. How many schoolyard fights did that save "you'se" sorry arse from encountering, just like mommy and daddy wanted for their oh-so-special-little-baby-boy? 😉 How truly sad that "you'se" never grew up, other than in their pathetic and cross-threaded shadow. My family differed, given a "local" heritage that went back to the Republic of Texas/Battle of San Jacinto: The universal assumption was that, if born a male; one would/must at least impersonate being such. I guess that purely opportunistic, corporate crap "morals" hampered your growth there.The very best "you'se" can do in life's apparently post lyrics from old songs....The most basic idiot of even 14 years of age could manage that. Why not have ANY any songs of your own "life" to sing? 😉

After more than 7 years of non-stop, loud, contentious and litigious disagreement, you expect the east and west to instantly kiss and make up just because you say they should?  NOTHING has happened to change the contentious relationship between east and west.  The company has used it to their advantage for all these years; the APA will do the same if they can.  It's a given.  Unity of the US Airways and AWA pilots is like expecting world peace to become a reality just because....

Today, the West class filed a notice of appeal with Judge Silver's court. You can read the notice here. This is the first step in filing an appeal and failure to file this notice within the 30 days of Judge Silver's March 31st order would preclude any appeal. The Clerk at the Ninth Circuit will receive a copy of this notice and they will initiate their process of docketing our case, and the West attorneys will soon file a notice to the Ninth Circuit which designates the parties to the appeal. Typically, there is a lapse of several weeks or even months before an appellant (the party who files the appeal) files the first brief, and it will not be until this brief is filed that the issues on appeal are known by the other parties. The West pilots in this appeal are the appellants.
