Seems AA has decided it doesn't want to pay F/A's to sit on their rump. 10 month and 3 month PLOA's are being offered. 10 month starts Feb 2009 through Nov 2009. 3 month starts Feb 2009 through Apr 2009. Can't find any information on how many PLOA's are being offered, or if they will be offered by base only and not system wide as I assume. AA doesn't like to have to move flying around to let more people go out on PLOA's or any type of leave. Online ballots are due Jan. 7, 2009 and 0830 ct Are any other work groups being offered leaves of any kind? According to crew manning, most leaves being offered are going to be of the 10 month variety.

Received this email today from a flight attendant. If you can afford to take a PLOA, please consider. The job you save could be your own or another fa who needs this job desperately. Thank you.

Subject: ORD info on warn letters and ploa's

Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2008 18:08:01 -0800

I get the DCA Newsblast sent out by Debbie Rolland and the following was included in her 12-20 Newsblast. It is from the ORD APFA reps.

......"ORD E-Mail Group,

This afternoon, the company has announced that they will be
offering a new round of Leaves. This current round will be a
Proffered Leave of Absence (PLOA), and not an Overage Leave (OL).
The main difference between a PLOA and an OL is that you stop
accruing seniority after 180 days, and your travel benefits are affected as well.

The main reason why the Company decided to go with the PLOA vs.
the OL is that when you offer an OL, you first have to send out
WARN Letters (Notice of a possible furlough), 60 days before any action.
The Company felt that they did not want to issue WARN Letters
at this point, and especially during the Holidays.
They will start to have an overage of FAs starting with the February
contractual month.

At this point, they are looking for approximately 425 10 month
leaves and 75 3 month leaves. If they do not receive enough
people taking these PLOA's, they will then move on to the WARN Letters/OL Proffer.

I know there are a number of people that put in for the last OL
who did not get it, and hopefully this will address those people's need for a leave.

This is all the information that I have at this time, but I will
certainly forward any additional information on to you as I receive it.

In Unity,
Todd & Debbie

Start to have an overage of FAs????? I suppose the fact that no one has flown their guarantee on RSV since sometime last Spring (at least here in SLT) is not yet an indication that there are too many f/as on the payroll. I maxxed out on AVBL last month, but only because I was able to beat others to the few OT trips. I doubt there were 10 of us (out of 50+) AVBLs that maxxed out in NOV.

For January, I already know that my AVBL line number is 3044. That means that 43 people senior to me were unable to hold anything, not even Vacation Relief. There are 21 people junior to me in SLT that are not on reserve in January. Unless something is really wrong with the bids, there will be 65 people on AVBL and over 50 on RSV in SLT in January--out of 377 active f/as. Start to have an overage? I'm glad they noticed.

I am guessing they feel they will have enough takers as thereis no mention of job sharing this time. I would love the job sharing option....
I don't think they will waste the postage on issuing these letters...

As far as I know, Job sharing is only offered as a furlough mitigation option after WARN letters have been sent. The PLOA is an attempt to avoid having to initiate the furlough process. There is a difference though in that the people who take the 10 month leave will lose 4 months of seniority--it stops accruing after 6 months. Also, IIRC, those on the PLOA will have no or limited travel benefits.

These two issues may make the PLOA less attractive to some people who wanted, but did not get the Overage Leaves of Absence.

My guess is that WARN letters will go out. They couldn't get enough people to take a bid leave at some bases for January so it is unlikely they will get enough to take a PLOA without benefits.

On a different note: Merry Christmas everyone.

hi all just wondering if anyone had any numbers on the ploas offered. have a good day

The only reference to the PLOA from management has been an HI6 (computer message) saying that PLOA awards have been posted to the individual f/a's HI10 (leave record), but no total numbers yet. As Skymess said, they can't even get people to take month-long bid leaves (which, btw, they have already announced are available in ALL bases for February).

According to an earlier post in this thread, they were looking for 425 10-month leaves and 75 3-month leaves. I hate to be the Cassandra here, but that is not enough people off the payroll to make a difference with the situation we have right now.

Over 30% of the active domestic f/as are not holding a line--i.e., they are on reserve, availability, or vacation relief. This is way too high. The percentage of active f/as not holding a line (reserves + vacation reliefs + availability) varies from a low of 31.04% in DFW-D to a high of 35.68% in SFO-D. BOS-D comes in at 34.38%. All other domestic bases were higher than DFW-D, but below 33%. With approx. 18,000 active f/as, using 30% as our number that is 5400 f/as not holding a line each month. I don't think 500 is going to make a difference.

This month I will "cover" my guarantee on Availability, but that is because I have over 20 hours of sick leave time this month and some pre-plotted trips for later this month. Last month on reserve (December, mind you), I finished the month with 40.27 hours and 10 of that was sitting airport standby. The situation is the same in all domestic bases, and I gather the same or similar in International bases.

One can only hope that with jet fuel back down in price, those major International expansion plans that engendered the recalls over the past year will be put back into motion.

Why AA hasn't told us is curious. I never thought people would take the leaves when you lose so much seniority and lose passes. They really aren't a good deal. It is way better to just drop trips if you don't want to work. It is my opinion, that AA is being tight liped while it is figuring out what it wants to do about any potential overage after the PLOA's are figured in to its' future forcast.
