I noted AA 235 left FCO an hour late this morning, but arrived 3 hours late. Can anyone enlighten me as to what happened? I assume a fuel stop?

My wife flew out on 236 last night, and will be taking 235 back in a few days--I always track flights we're booked on to see history.

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Two places to look include www.aacargo.com which reveals that the delay was due to air traffic control. Although it departed at 1103 (scheduled for 1010), it didn't takeoff until 1338, or 2.5 hours of delay after it left the gate. It landed at 1648 and arrived at the gate at 1655. I don't think it stopped for gas.

Another source is http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp which reveals that all NYC airports are experiencing possible ground stops due to weather and atc. For instance, JFK shows:

Due to VOLUME / VOLUME, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 1 hour and 56 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".

The FAA site says that LGA is experiencing delays due to weather/rain, etc.

Perhaps 235 was held at FCO because of the possible ground stops and then ATC delays slowed its flight to JFK?

European ATC does not enforce US restrictions such as ground stops and ground delay programs. However, all European airspace in the upper air route structure are slot controlled and each flight is assigned a wheels up time every day. Some days are better than others and flights from southern Europe frequently get takeoff delays when headed for the North Atlantic tracks structure. This particular flight got hit the worse mainly due to thunderstorms in France and Germany restricting already very congested airspace. AA111 FCO-ORD and AA199 MXP-JFK also took hits that day. But not as bad as AA235
