Valley Air Express, which once received hefty federal subsidies to fly out of Southern California Logistics Airport, has now received a $592,000 grant to set up shop in New Mexico.

The Department of Transportation issued the fledgling company an Essential Air Subsidy contract to run commuter flights between fly Alamogordo and Abuquerque.

Alamogordo City Manager Pat McCourt said Valley Air Express has not been able to execute a single flight since the contract was awarded on Oct. 21.

"They apparently are having problems getting the FAA certification to fly," he said.

Up until last year, Valley Air received $400,000 in yearly subsidies from the FAA for flights between Victorville and Las Vegas. SCLA also received grant funding because an aircarrier was active at the airport.

Valley Air was to have provided weekend service to the Las Vegas area, a service that did not meet contract expectations due to poor marketing and lack of public interest.
