i just heard than an american airlines captain flipped off a brazilian guard at gru because he was asked to take his picture taken and get finger printed. same as we do here when foriegners enter the country. the whole crew is being detained. the captain might get deported. don't know the whole scoop maybe someone else might know.

No, its not "the same as we do here when forigners enter the country". Travelers entering the US are fingerprinted and photographed at the immigration station at the same time their passport is being processed. It takes a min or two at most. American citizens entering Brazil are being subject to "special treatment" by being pulled out of line and being made to wait. In one case it was NINE HOURS! Even though its wrong to flip off an Officer I can understand why a pilot who's worn out and wants to get to his Hotel and is being subjected to this anti-American garbage would do it. Our gov needs to do SOMETHING about this and soon!

If this country is going to stomp all over peoples civil rights and alienate the rest of the world, there will be repercussions.

Exactly! Americans are very arrogant when it comes to other countries and their rules. Even coming home from foriegn countries passengers always tell you " I'm American I don't have to fill out any forms."

Do you want to go through another 9/11? This is reality now so get use to it. We don't "stomp" all over people's civil rights. If someone traveling to our country doesn't want to follow the rules to get into the USA, then they can just take their a** right back to the place they came from.

Thats just how the terrorist got into this country. By following the rules! Don't you remember them getting visa's ok'd after 9-11

Atta had a German passport. Furthermore, we exempt several countries from the fingerprinting and photographing...hardly an effective way of deterring terrorists from entering our country. I personally do not blame Brazil for honoring the reciprocity that has LONG existed between our nations for visas. This pilot had a major lapse of judgment fueled by his American arrogance.
Before you all jump all over me, I just want to say that it would be different if the US enforced the fingerprinting/photographing with all nations, but to exempt certain nations, especially ones that harbor people such as Atta and Richard Reid, is just a slap in the face to many of our historical friends. Either do it right or don't do it at all.

I would expect nothing less from you. Nice too know you do not dissapoint. Why don’t we just start with the current administration stating that if someone speaks out against the cluster f&^% in Iraq that they are unpatriotic and go from there. The civil rights I am referring to are ours as well as those visiting this country.

As if taking pictures of a few people will really accomplish anything. Like Art said, either do it right or don’t bother. As I recall a gentleman shipped him self via cargo and several airports with out being detected. Yea, Bush has made this country really safe. What a joke. Hitting this country again would be about as difficult as hitting the inside of a barn with an uzi. Any moron could do it. Hell, even you could probably pull it off if you really tried hard.

Brazil detains U.S. airline crew after pilot makes obscene gesture

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) -- An American Airlines pilot was arrested at Sao Paulo International Airport Wednesday after making an obscene gesture while being photographed by Brazilian immigration officers, police said.

The pilot, identified as Dale Robin Hirsch, raised his middle finger at police to protest new Brazilian security measures that require U.S. citizens to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entering the South American country.

Brazil implemented the policy on January 1 in retaliation for a similar U.S. program that requires those foreign visitors who need visas to have their fingerprints and pictures taken on arrival in the United States.

"He made an internationally known obscene gesture when he was being photographed by the Federal Police," Federal Police agent Wagner Castilho told Reuters news agency. He said the other crew members were denied entry after refusing to cooperate with security officials.

The incident came just one day after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva personally appealed to President Bush to suspend visa requirements for each other's nationals and thus fingerprint checks.

Lula's request was expected to fall on deaf ears in Washington, D.C. Brazilians are among the top groups of illegal immigrants detained in the United States.

Castilho said the pilot will be charged with disobeying authority. A judge will decide whether Hirsch, 52, will be deported or tried in Brazil, Castilho added.

The remaining 11 members of the Miami, Florida-based crew were expected to be returned to the United States.

A spokesman in Sao Paulo for American Airlines said the carrier "respects the laws of the countries in which it operates," but declined further comment.

U.S. citizens have been subject to long lines at Brazilian airports since the new security measures were implemented, prompting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to complain that Americans were being discriminated against.

Eager to speed up the process, Brazil on Wednesday rushed to gather digital fingerprint readers from police stations across the country. Officials said they will be ready by Thursday to register U.S. visitors in "30 seconds" rather than the hours it takes with an ink pad.

With Rio de Janeiro's famous Carnival coming in February, the city is worried about the impact on tourism. It has taken to handing out roses and "Rio Loves You" T-shirts to U.S. visitors and Wednesday laid on hip-wriggling Samba dancers at its airport arrival gate.

Would you rather have FINGERPRINTS or more FOOTPRINTS like the ones being made as a memorial where the Twin Towers stood to honor all those lost on 9/11?
This government got lax throughout the years and were too arrogant to think terrorists would never strike on our soil. The Brazil situation is unique because US citizens are being giventhe "special treatment."

Hope,

The government is still lax as well as the people. You think the TSA can stop a terrorist? They have a difficult finding their way to work. Our borders are open. We support countries who people despise us, we have an administration that lies to us on a regular basis. Do you really feel safer when you go to an airport to get on a flight? I sure as hell don’t. I had metal eating utensils in my back pack and forgot to remove them. I went out of DFW and not a peep was said. Came back out of SNA, they took 1 metal fork, left a metal spoon (easier for me to hold) and a second fork they did not see (and I did not know I had). That is supposed to make me feel safe? They took a 1 ¼ inch Swiss army knife and let me keep a 6 inch steel pen. Which is more dangerous?

Yes Brazil is unique. Brazil is standing up to the bully on the block. They are telling the bully that they are not an island but part of the international community and damn well better start acting like it.

Garf,

You fail to mention that what has happened to this country on 9/11 was years in the making after decades of hatred towards the US. It has nothing to do with this administation lying to us. Administration after administration, republican and democrat alike haven't done an awful lot to make us safer.

I suppose we weren't the bully on the block after Pearl Harbor got bombed. I suppose we werent the bully on the block ending Hitler's reign of terror. After all what did ol' Adolph do the us?

Since you have all the answers, what do you suggest we do to make the airlines safer? Hell, what do you suggest we do to make the country safer?

The Captain? Unbelievably stupid. Could make an arguement that he doesn't have the maturity or good sense to be a captain.

The Brazilian Government? 3rd World, Corrupt, Stupid, Immature, Childish. Ops normal for them.

Memo to U.S. flight crews arriving at GRU:

When they take your picture--look at the birdie, but don't flip the bird.

Do not under any circumstances say to Brazilian immigration officers
(and most definitely not while doing a "Bogie" impression)
"If you're the police, where are your badges?"
