I do not want to see any employee lose their job and there is no question in my mind that US Airways mechanics are the best in the business.
Last week I made a comment on this message board that the company was going to outsource Pittsburgh and Philadelphia deicing, along with eliminating 35 Pittsburgh Automated Baggage Service positions.
Some of the more prolific posters on this board said, I was wrong, but I said this was part of management's plan that has been leaked within the company to make it more painful on the IAM, well now it's true.
Management is going to turn up the heat on all employee groups and the IAM may become a large target, with the Pittsburgh Maintenance facility next, if the IAM does not agree to participate in the "Transformation Plan".
I believe the company would like to keep the A320 overhaul in-house and keep the B737 maintenance facility open, but the work would have to be done at a competitive rate with LCCs.
Let's hope the parties can come together and reach an acceptable agreement before more of US Airways' great mechanics lose their jobs, which would be unfortunate.
Respectfully,
USA320Pilot
P.S. I bet the company does not care about the grievance and in fact, it would not surprise me to see management tun up the heat even more by simply firing employees and then letting them grieve their job loss. This sucks, but it would not surprise me.
