Attorney General Greg Abbott is scheduled to hold a news conference with American Airlines CEO Tom Horton on Tuesday afternoon, prompting speculation that Abbott is adjusting his opposition to the Fort Worth-based airline's merger with US Airways. Abbott, who is running for governor, has drawn criticism from business groups and political opponents for his decision to join with the U.S. Justice Department in fighting the merger. The attorney general's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment ahead of the news conference. American Airlines and North Texas leaders have insisted that the merger is critical to the survival of American Airlines, a major North Texas employer. Abbott has defended the lawsuit, arguing that the merger would reduce competition in the airline industry and lead to higher ticket prices and reduced service. Abbott's decision to appear publicly with Horton suggests some change in the AG's position. One option could be a settlement that allows both sides to frame the outcome as a win. State Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, who is expected to launch her own campaign for governor this week, has also been vocal of her support for the merger for weeks. "That was the wrong call," Davis said of opposition to the merger during a keynote discussion at the Texas Tribune Festival on Sunday. Abbott's best-known Republican challenger, former GOP state chairman Tom Pauken, has also expressed support for the merger and criticized Abbott for joining a lawsuit with the Obama administration. Pauken said Tuesday he was no "mind reader" but predicted the attorney general would change his position on the merger. "He's put himself in such a corner that it will be interesting to see how he justifies changing positions," Pauken said. "He probably did some polling and saw it was hurting him among conservatives and rank-and-file Republicans. He's trying to cut his losses earlier rather than later." Also Tuesday, the Department of Justice asked a judge to temporarily halt the antitrust case against American Airlines and US Airways because of the government shutdown.

Abbott does know he's making an agreement with the OLD American Airlines and not the NEW American Airlines, right?

We all know how previous agreements work if the one of the parties changes their name..... B) 😛

If it takes a shutdown to rid ourselves of Obamacare, fine.

Court delay?
Maybe, maybe not....there will be justice in the long run.

The Affordable Care Act is not going away any more than Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security will go away. It's the law of the land, and you might as well get used to it. And (I love this part) it is funded already, so it is functional even with the shutdown!

Suck it up Republicans and those of you in the House expect to start looking for new work on January 1, 2015.

Just like in the Addington case your too foolish to realize you have no case.
Affordable care act will not be stopped by this shirade.

What won't be stopped is a bunch of Robbin Hoods and their lawyers getting rich by stealing to give to the poor.

Typical Left Coast Liberals who have no idea about how the free market works. I've spent a lot of time in Europe and don't want any part of socialized healthcare.

Tell you what, when Mayor Bloomberg tells me I can't supersize my drink, I'll order two mediums and supersize it myself.

We know you, you couldn't get a job in the US, so you were forced to work in AUSTRALIA?

Do you think that the reason the DOJ does not want any sort of discovery is because it would not stand the light of day? Maybe the DOJ solicited state attorneys to come out against the merger? Sounds paranoid but if you're not paranoid in this business then maybe you don't understand how it works.

Regards,

Bob

My guess: Europe is equally happy to see you leave.

Golly, gee whiz! That is a downright hysterical knee-slapper.

Did you think that up all by yourself? You are just WAY too clever for words.

Order two.....whoodathunkit?

Taking a stand on Obama care is only a small symptom of the dysfunction that exists on the "hill". The real problem is that both sides are trying to blame the other and both see the shutdown as the other sides doing. I think that neither side is intelligent enough to poor pee out of a boot even if the instuctions are written on the bootheels. Bottom line is while they are drawing lines in the sand you and I and all other tax paying citizens are being screwed. Rather than those on the hill being public servants they are instead "servicing" the public if you catch my drift.

Sorry for the thread creep,

Bob
