I agree that those seats are horrible and I wish the economics of the industry were such that we could get rid of them. Pre-9/11 I had heard that this was being considered, but I have not heard anything about that since. I'm sorry that they keep you from flying NWA, but I understand completely.
While there are people at NWA who wish the other airlines ill, just as there are those at other airlines who wish NWA ill, I can tell you for certain that they are in the minority. I recently had an employee of another airline harangue me for half an hour because NWA did not follow the other carriers price increases, as if I, a mechanic, had any say in the matter. However, I know from experience that he is in the minority at his carrier as well.
Anyone who has been in this industry for a while comes to realize that we have more in common with the employees at the other airlines than we have differences. We deal with each other frequently, often on a daily basis, and I've always liked the fact that the competition between our carriers usually doesn't get in the way of helping each other when the need arises.
The vast majority of us watch what is happening at other carriers, and our own, with a great sadness, knowing that "There, but for the grace of God, go I". We have friends at other airlines and know their families and know that they are people just like us and know all too well the devastating effects of what they're going through. Many of us came from other airlines and have been through what these people are now going through. We have seen great names such as Pan Am, Eastern, TWA, and others, disappear and know that no one is immune.
I have said repeatedly in this forum that I wish the people at UAL or the other bankrupt carriers no ill, and I know that the majority of my fellow NWA employees feel the same. I hope that you will not let a vocal minority keep you from flying NWA.
