There is no such thing as having the wrong people at the table.
Oh yes there is.
On being farmed out. I don’t push the fear button. Life is a challenge full of risks and decisions.
Exactly.
And so in other words you’re saying that the non union AMT’s at Delta being light years ahead of those poor AMFA represented souls had the keys to Paradise compared to those who stayed out shivering in the cold?
PMNW AMTs were working under imposed terms at the time of the merger. We've covered this 1000x. PMDL employees obviously were not. For the NW side, voting "no" meant an immediate--and sizable--raise, restoration of overtime rules, lost vacation weeks, and more.

So right now the only people you have at the table are Delta Management. Unless you think those “value committee” volunteers are the right people to project your voices? We all know what kind of an illusion that is.

Ok but personally even if Delta doubled your pay and benefits I wouldn’t trade places with you. Obviously those AMFA members many of whom were probably IAM supporters anyway didn’t see the value proposition AMFA presented to them on that picket line.

I’ll always maintain that I would have had far more respect for AMFA if they let them at least have that do you want to cut your throats last chance vote.

Honestly if TWU ever did that to me I’d abandon my support for them forever. Members always should get the last say, not the “wrong people” at the table.

Congrats to all involved in getting this done. Now AMFA represents 7 airlines and/or entities. The growth and expansion of AMFA within the Mechanics ranks in the airline industry just speaks volumes how important it is to be represented by a Mechanics Class and Craft specific union as AMFA is.

CIRB CERTIFIES AMFA AS COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGENT AT WESTJET
Mar 31, 2023
March 31, 2023
Dear WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Skilled Trade Groups:
On March 30, 2023, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) granted AMFA’s application for certification as the bargaining agent at WestJet for a unit comprising of:
All employees of WestJet, an Alberta Partnership, integral to the coordination and performance of aircraft maintenance, including aircraft maintenance engineers (AME), apprentice AMEs, aircraft maintenance leads (AML), avionics technicians (AVT), apprentice AVTs, inspector crew leads (ICL), structures AMEs, apprentice structures AMEs, maintenance planners, day-of operations planners, technicians furnishing, apprentice technicians furnishing, maintenance controllers, senior specialists configuration control, fleet engineers, instructors technical, senior instructors technical, technical representatives and senior specialists technical services, excluding receiving inspectors, lead receiving inspectors, maintenance auditors, quality assurance auditors, GSE positions, management coordinators and positions above.
The Board confirmed that the unit “share a community of interests in that the work performed is directed towards the repair, maintenance and trade certification of aircraft.” Responding to Company objections, the Board reaffirmed its exclusive power to shape and define bargaining units. The certified unit covers approximately 670 employees.
AMFA could not be more excited to work with its newest members and advocate for your interests in raising the standards and elevating the craft/trade. AMFA’s footprint in Canada continues to expand – it now represents AMEs and skilled trade groups in Canada at L3 Harris MAS and WestJet. The CIRB is currently seized with AMFA’s application to represent skilled maintenance employees at Air Canada. Employee groups at other major Canadian airlines have expressed interest in AMFA representation as being a craft/trade-specific, independent aviation union.
Sincerely,
Bret Oestreich
National President

AMFA WELCOMES WESTJET AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS AND SKILLED TRADE GROUPS
CENTENNIAL, Colo.
– March 31, 2023 – The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) officially announced yesterday that WestJet Airlines Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and skilled trade groups chose the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) as their collective bargaining agent. And today, AMFA is proud to continue to lead a craft/trade-specific labor union movement in Canada, while also continuing to be a force at the negotiating table and the voice of our skilled professionals in the United States. The North American wage comparison data in Canada for AMEs and Related professionals has been suppressed for too long.

On January 31, 2023, the AMEs and Related at WestJet Airlines submitted signed authorization for representation cards from nearly 74% of its workgroup to AMFA, requesting that they file for a representation election with the CIRB on behalf of their workgroup.

“This is a critical time for these talented professionals to be represented by a craft-specific union that has extensive success and proven experience related to merger protections and provisions for securing work rules through collective bargaining for seniority integration, transition agreement, and single carrier status,” said Bret Oestreich, AMFA National President. “We are honored to give these professionals a voice as stakeholders and to help them take control of their own destiny through democratic representation.”

“AMFA is the first and only craft-specific union to represent this skilled trade workgroup. The grassroots organizing committee started this union campaign, and today’s outcome was the culmination and affirmation of their dedication and hard work,” said Oestreich.

Prior to today’s announcement, WestJet Airlines skilled aviation trade groups were the last non-union major employee workgroup at the airline since its founding in 1994.
WestJet Airlines Ltd. is the second-largest Canadian airline, behind Air Canada, operating an average of 777 flights and carrying more than 66,130 passengers per day. WestJet is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, near Calgary International Airport. In 2018, WestJet carried 25.49 million passengers, making it the ninth-largest airline in North America by passengers carried.
As of March 2023, WestJet’s merger with Sunwing Airlines has been approved by Canada’s transportation minister.

Congratulations that you now represent 7 groups of workers. But no it doesn’t speak volumes. What will speak volumes is if AMFA can negotiate contracts that their members can be proud of and other groups not represented by AMFA will want to emulate.

I remain highly pessimistic that I will ever see that in my lifetime.

Ok AMFA has submitted its financial report to the DOL on time. They now say that they represent 4009 M&R and they have paid $558,368 to Seeham Seeham Meltz and Peterson. That is $150,000 less than they paid them in 2021 which included items related to “AA Issues” who they have no one at the Airline they represent. 👏 Bravo AMFA. Maybe this time you only paid Seeham for actual issues that involve your own dues payers.

Now it makes sense as I was wondering how WestJet surpassed Air Canada bring AMFA in for new representation.
Apparently, the IAM is getting even more restless about the membership wanting to fire the IAM and bring in AMFA to replace them for representation.
I leave below some actions being taken in order to get it all done but, of course it'll take a little more time with the IAM acting as the industrial unions always do when the membership wants them gone and AMFA to take over for a much better Mechanic's Class and Craft Representation...

AMFA LETTER TO CIRB RE: EMPLOYEE STATEMENT
March 27, 2023 -- AMFA writes briefly to endorse the opinions and bargaining history presented by Mr. James Burden in his March 16, 2023 letter. Based on his experiences as an IAMAW negotiator, Mr. Burden is uniquely positioned to describe how a lack of community of interest between skilled maintenance employees and other employees within the TMOS group has frustrated collective bargaining efforts.

AMFA OBJECTION TO THE IAMAW'S REQUEST FOR AN EXTENSION
March 21, 2023 -- Ordinarily, as a matter of courtesy, AMFA and its attorneys would consent to procedural accommodations requested by an opposing counsel. Such courtesy cannot be extended in the present instance. As documented in its reply brief, AMFA has received numerous reports of IAMAW retaliation against Air Canada employees suspected of supporting AMFA’s organization efforts. The Board’s Officers have heard directly from those affected employees. Additional rebuttal briefing would delay the consideration of AMFA’s application by a number of weeks. In the meantime, AMFA believes that the IAMAW will continue its retaliation efforts.

Why don’t you try to have a little humility Pal. I guess you forgot about that time a few years ago when AMFA only got 8 write in votes at USAIRWAYS when the Mechanics had a representational dispute between the IAM and IBT.

“The IAM received 1,903 votes, according to an IAM spokesman. The Teamsters, seeking to raid the group, won 1,418 votes. 8 people voted for AMFA. There were 4,376 eligible voters”

This is DOA by the way. No spitting of class and craft in Canada.
More AMFA dues wasted.

I guess WestJet doesn't like the fact that their AME's unionized with AMFA and is challenging the CIRB ruling. Well, probably just a little delay or tactic to stir up the nego's process, or so they thought.

AMFA is such a horrible horrible terrible bad Union I can’t even describe how bad it is in writing. Just a total fraud fake Union and the absolute joke of the Airline Industry. They don’t actually represent anyone as much as they just take money from the dupes that are stupid enough to sign up for their scam.

SCAMFA tried this same crap in the US several times only to be smacked down by the NMB and US Courts.

The Class and Craft is and will always be Mechanic and RELATED.

That guy is kook.

Everything they do ultimately funnels back to the Seeham Seeham Meltz and Peterson Law Firm. I’m sure once again the charges are billed to the SWA Mechanics.

Great to hear this joint venture below. Thanks to Rob Cush for sharing this. Always like hearing about a union working to fix the shortage of aircraft maint professionals in our industry flow into Canada. Way to go AMFA, keep up the great work in looking out for the Mechanics and AME's of the Aviation world.

AMFA and GS5 Next Gen Aviation Launch Strategic Alliance Training Next Generation of Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Technicians/Engineers
CENTENNIAL, CO – May 5, 2023 – The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) and GS5 Next Gen Aviation Education have formed a strategic alliance to offer a new educational model for aspiring Aircraft Maintenance Technicians/Engineers (AMT/AME) in Canada.
“The AMFA-GS5 strategic alliance is a collaborative effort focused on preparing tomorrow’s aviation skilled trade workforce in Canada. Together, we will promote the use of new virtual technologies and enhance the education and training of our skilled trades”, said Bret Oestreich, AMFA National President. “This alliance exemplifies AMFA’s commitment to developing solutions aimed at combatting the impending shortage of aircraft maintenance technicians/engineers and industry skilled trade groups.”
Since being certified by the Canada Industrial Relation Board as the trade union representative at L3 Technologies MAS in 2022, AMFA continues working to uplift the AME trade, culminating in Canada elevating their professional designation.
GS5’s training model uses virtual reality, gamification, and other immersive learning technologies. Their unique approach to aviation education reduces traditional workforce transition times and costs by 30% while increasing learner engagement for higher levels of safety and knowledge retention. And with the critical labor shortages, the industry is forced to face.
“By leveraging technology, we have developed an innovative way of attracting more people to the aviation industry,” said Boyd Parsons, GS5 Chief Operating Officer. “Our flexible earn-while-you-learn model, powered by industry-leading technology, is particularly attractive and affordable for the next generation looking to enter the profession of aircraft maintenance. We are excited to announce this strategic alliance with AMFA which will add immeasurable value.
