CWA as a Union

Thanks for everyone's input. On or off topic, I continue to appreciate it.

Unless anyone objects, I'd like to cut and paste some of your comments into an email and send it to a few AA agents for reference.

Please be sure to review Article 25 in CWA CBA and the time limits for each step to keep a grievance in the pipeline and active. We also have a link to the grievance form to the left, which you can print out and use. IF you do not have a steward available and need to file a grievance in a timely manner, please contact your local for assistance, there is a link to their emails below. We do not want people to miss a time limit to file a grievance or appeal it to the next step. It is the employee/grievant's responsibility to advance the grievance to the next step once they get the oral reply or written response at each level. Please keep your steward and or local in the loop in case the company fails to copy the steward or local in on their response to your grievance. Always remember to list a REMEDY on your grievance, which is what you would like if you win the grievance, for example, to be allowed to work the overtime you were bypassed for.

I ask because the AA agents are trying to push a union drive and it seems to be falling on it's ass. My last trip through MIA I had a couple of agents tell me they hadn't heard squat since joining, but the dues are flowing out of their bank accounts. I told them I could ask people who know about CWA . . . and I did.

Thanks to those who responded thus far! Appreciate it.
We Are the Union, The Union is NOT a 3rd Party.

The Association of Passenger Service Agents is a union started by agents at American Airlines. Our Officers and Executive Board is made up of agents like you that are elected by our members. We do not limit the amount of participation in our union like the Agent Advisory Board and Employee Advisory Councils do. In addition, we choose the issues that want to work on and collectively come up with a plan. Our union was built by American Airlines agents, and is run by American Airlines agents.

The Anti-Union campaigns that the company ran during our last election convinced many of us that the union is just a 3rd party that we pay dues to and we let them do whatever it is they think we want. This couldn't be further from the truth. Currently as a union without collective bargaining we pay a minimal amount of dues, $10.00, $15.00, or $20.00 dollars a month based on our salary and full-time or part-time status, which goes to run our local. We pay office expenses, and our Executive Board decides and votes on how to best spend our money to increase our membership, while working toward another election and collective bargaining. Three dollars per member per month is paid to the International Union in Washington DC, which is still paying a large portion of expenses including the majority of a full time organizer dedicated to our campaign. This makes us full members of the Communications Workers of America.

Once we get to an election and win collective bargaining rights, the process becomes even more democratic on a much larger scale. After winning an election we will elect a bargaining committee consisting of representatives from different areas of the class and craft of eligible employees. For example at US Airways the agents elected agents from different departments and areas within these departments. Part-time and Full-time agents from reservations, part-time and full-time agents from airports and agents from different areas within each of these departments were needed to get a good sense of what agents wanted negotiated in their contract. All members of the union are encouraged to participate because our union is run by our members, American Airlines agents, and is only as strong as it's members.

We are the officers and executive board, the bargaining and negotiating teams, and as members we will always have a say in how are union is run, and we will always vote on a contract before it is ever signed. To find out how you can get your station more involved contact us at 817-868-9933 or by email at cwa4aa@sbcglobal.net for more information. In addition watch your email this week for more information pertaining to how contracts can benefit workers at the same company with different needs, how CWT/AHT in reservations is dealt with at other airlines, and watch for more information on what's going on around the system and how we can effectively change it.

Is Your Station or Reservations Office Ready to Join Us?

Over the past two months agents at MIA realized how critical it is to move forward and expand the Association of Passenger Service Agents. More and more agents are finding themselves working flights alone, and finding more of their work being turned over to contracted help and self-service kiosks. They are also finding that with the majority of agent jobs at airports being part-time that they are being forced to work mandatory overtime instead of being given the option to move to full-time status. Agents are scrambling to pick up hours and work overtime and then being forced to work mandatory overtime and in some cases working over 14-16 hours a day and having to return 4-5 hours after they leave.

The MIA airport has a major problem with rats, mice, cockroaches, and other bugs that are biting passenger service agents and in one case landing a person in a doctor's office. Mold is growing out of the air conditioning vents in Terminal C. These problems coupled with the fact that the union groups will be renegotiating their contracts in 2008, and the over $200 million dollars in bonuses paid to just over 800 managers has made the agents realize that it's time to take control of our own destiny. Agents in MIA realize that unless we build our organization and unite to take on issues that we will be the last to see changes in our working conditions, benefits, and wages.

In just a few short weeks over one hundred agents in MIA realized that joining the APSA Local 6001 means that we will be stronger and better positioned to enact changes where we can and to move closer to wining an election and collective bargaining rights. Is your reservations office or stations ready to meet with other agents to jump on board and help? If so, contact us at 817-868-9933 or via email at cwa4aa@sbcglobal.net to set up a meeting for your city.

Until then you need the CWA.

sky high states: What does the CWA think about F/A's coming off the plane to do wheelchairs and UM's, and possibly pull tickets? Isnt that a CWA JOB?

AFA-CWA OUTRAGED BY RECENT FAA DECISION THAT ALLOWS AIRLINE TO CIRCUMVENT REGULATIONS
Washington, DC -The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) is considering filing a formal appeal with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over a recent ruling which reduces the required number of flight attendants onboard an aircraft during the boarding of passengers at an intermediate stop. Late last week, the FAA granted Southwest Airlines permission to circumvent long standing federal aviation regulations by substituting a pilot for a flight attendant in between flights.
The ruling allows a pilot to handle flight attendant duties while the aircraft is parked so the flight attendant can take on additional responsibilities in the boarding area. "Flight attendants serve a critical role during the boarding and deplaning process and that role should not be compromised," said Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President. "Not only are we essential in the event of an emergency evacuation, but we also help to protect security inside the aircraft by assessing each passenger for unusual or suspicious behavior." The ruling exempts Southwest Airlines from complying with important federal regulations that govern flight attendant crew complements based on the weight and seating capacity of an aircraft.
These regulations also provide specific circumstances when minimum crew requirements can be reduced in between flights while the plane in on the ground. "The FAA should have protected this regulation, but instead they caved to industry pressure. As a result, management at other airlines has already signaled their intent to file for similar exemptions. Airline executives will use this exemption ruling to layer more and more duties and responsibilities on the backs of flight attendants which will dilute our critical safety and security roles," said Friend. Southwest Airlines flight attendants are represented by the Transport Workers Union and are not affiliated with AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union.
For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. More than 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org. Thank you,Mike Flores, PresidentThe US Airways Master Executive CouncilAFA-CWA

THE CWA WAS VOTED IN OR PROTECT OUR WAGES AND BENEFITS. we ARE ACTUALLY WORSE OFF SINCE THEY GOT ON THE PROPERTY, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE OF US THAT SUFFERD THE INDIGNITY OF MAINLINE EXPRESS. I USED TO CALL THEM THE "COWARDLY WEENIES ASSN", NOW I CALL THEN THE "UNION OF POOR EXCUSES". AFTER EVERY ROUND OF CONCESSIONS THE RESPONSE WAS THE SAME, "WELL, WE TRIED" "WE HAD NO CHOICE" AND MY FAVORITE, "IT WAS THE BEST WE COULD DO". IT SEEMS OUR CONTRACT DOES -NOT- HAVE A WAGE REOPENER CLAUSE, BUT THEY LET SEIGEL AND LAKEFIELD OPEN IT UP FOR GIVEBACKS 3 TIMES.

WE NEED TO PETITION THE NMB FOR A NEW ELECTION AND VOTE IN THE IBT.

What employee group is better off union/non-union then they were 5 years ago? What would make IBT any better? Would you rather work express? How many mainlines do your work a day? I am 100% in agreement if it is mainline mainline employees should work it. This is a big job security issue. CWA should have never back of on this issue. If you remember in bankrupts 1 the vote for the concessions was pass by only 5 VOTES. CWA staff and presidents said concessions were not a result of “good faithâ€￾ bargaining but rather an ultimatum form management to accept their demands or face liquidation and sale of assets. Did CWA have the support of all of its members to take a strike vote and walk the line and seek self help and call managements bluff to kept station from going express?
This is when James went on record and voted NO and Chip wrote to the press. Anyway CWA got back some express station are you one?

Cwa is part if the Ibt/Cwa Passenger Service Organization. Our union has gotten us date of hire seniority, mainline express pay back up to mainline pay totally by January 1, 2008 and we receive snapbacks to top salaries by end of contract. Looks to me it is the ONLY union that has protected Usairways employees. We cannot go back and change what happened during 2 bk's nor can we change the companies ideals on what is in our future, but without the Ibt/Cwa Passenger Service Ass. we would not be PROTECTED, unlike fleet (Iam, mechanics (Iam) and pilot (Alpa)groups. Our transistion was completed over one year ago and we are moving FOWARD.

Without this association we would be making 7 and change , no medical etc.. With that said this is the only Union group that has made permanent progress for the livelihood of our passenger service group at Usairways.

THE CWA ARE A BUNCH OF MONEY STEALING IDOTS, WORTHLESS
WOULD NOT RECOMMNED TO ANYONE, THEY WILL TELL YOU ANYTHING
YOU WANT TO HEAR, BUT WHEN THEY ARE IN FORGET IT...WE HAVE
ISSUE'S WITH THE COMPANY, THERE IS NO HELP WITH THE
UNION ATTORNEY.....NEW UNION ON IT'S WAY

On the west we had just voted in the IBT prior to the merger but had no contract. The CWA although working for its members worked together with the IBT to form the association, which albeit a bankrupcy contract, gave west employees a contract sooner than we thought possible with wage increases. Nothing is perfect but I think the CWA was willing to extend an olive branch to the IBT to help things along. We on the west are looking forward to the snapbacks in 2011. Mama

So Phlagent which union will we take on next? We are Cwa, we are Ibt, so now who? Ahhhh! Iam ? Well I don't think so ! They can't even get a transition agreement together, cwa's has been completed 15 months ago. Ibt would never seperate from the Association. I admit the National is not worth a dime but we have a contract in place that is binding and will be changed in 2012. It is better than nothing and that is what the other groups have right now, nothing!

. Our union has gotten us date of hire seniority,

HIRE DATE SENIORITY CAME INTO EFFECT IN 1996, 3 YEARS BEFORE THE CWA WAS VOTED IN. AND YES, ML EXP WAGES ARE GOING BACK UP TO WHERE THEY SHOULD BE, BUT DON'T FORGET THE CWA ALSO RECLASSFIED US , THE VERY THING WE FOUGHT HARD TO GET RID OF. AND DONT FORGET THE DEPLORABLE WAY THE DISPLACEMENTS WERE HANDLED WHEN STATIONS WENT EXPRESS, PICK A STATION. GO WHEN YOURE CALLED OR GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST. WHEN MY STATION WENT EXPRESS IN 2003, I WAS EXPLAINING THIS TO MY PARISH PRIEST, HIS RESPONSE SUMS IT ALL UP "ITS TOO BAD YOU DON'T HAVE A UNION".....
NEED I SAY MORE?

Remember Newman, it was the "company" who wanted mainline express and mainline express pay!

It was one of the saddest things a corp. could do to their employees, it is about time the wages are going back up to mainline.

DOH is governed by the Allegeny-Mohawk labor protective provision in CWA’s contract this is very important in the event of a merger with another air carrier (HP) Parker did not want DOH and the west teamster (HP) did not want DOH .Are your even paying attention to the pilots situation. CWA still has the change of control provision with pay raises and other provision in the contract. Again if it’s mainline mainline employees should work it. How many mainline flights or at your station? If you had NO UNION I would hate to see your pay and how many stations outsourced. $13.09 hr.TOS with merit raises is what HP was and is what management insisted on when in bankrupts and the merger had not even been announce. CWA had to take a strike vote just to have bargaining power at the table. Took management by surprise. As far as your PARISH PRIEST
Tell him your current pay and benefits future increases and what your outsourced pay and benefits future increases were. And you better believe the company would not have done this without membership union support just ask your IAM union brother
