"A few patterns become obvious. First, US Airways, along with subsidiaries Piedmont and PSA, dominate the category for punctual winter holiday travel. In recent years the airline has focused on having its planes depart exactly as scheduled. "We're focusing on this because on-time departures give you a better chance of an on-time arrival," says US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr."

"In recent years the airline has focused on having its planes depart exactly as scheduled."
Mainline Dec 13 D:00 = 70.6%, MTD = 72.7%
Express Dec 13 D:00 = 55.6%, MTD = 68.9%

I guess less than 3 out of 4 is "exactly as scheduled"...

Fine, lets get nit picky if you want. It says ITS FOCUSED on getting the flights out on time, it doesnt state that every flight leaves on time. They are focused on it whether it actually occurs or not. Thats why the 10 minute jetway door close, 5 minute plane door rule is pushed so hard by management. They are focused on getting the planes out on time. Stuff happens that make it impossible for it to happen all the time, but take a minute and I guarantee you, someone in management will be "focusing" on why you didnt get the plane out on time. Understand corporate speak now?

Fair enough - focused on on-time departures. The article did say "In recent years the airline has focused on having its planes depart exactly as scheduled." when in reality US has focused on having it's planes depart no later than scheduled (and meeting that only about 3/4 of the time or less).

Fine - find me a consecutive 12 month period when D:00 was 100%...

"To come up with our list of Best and Worst Airlines for Holiday Travel, we turned to FlightStats, which tracks historical and real-time flight data worldwide. FlightStats supplied us with arrivals data for the largest U.S.-based airlines for the last three holiday seasons,"

When the clock starts has a lot to do with were managements focus is
The airlines are on the honor system to report their arrival and departure information, passengers are entitled to on-time information that’s reported by an objective third party, and delivered in real time. Executive/Management bonuses are tied to on-time records the pressure is on to push back as early as possible.
Scheduled flight length gives little insight into actual flight length
Meaning that when it comes to air travel, early is the new late.
