Furlough Speculation

The announcements for furloughs will most probably be announced at the Labor Advisory meeting tomorrow. Hold on to your seats...rough ride ahead. Management pay cuts will be announced but not their furlough status. Major cuts in fleet to be expected since they signed off the TA. The west will pay for it as speculated. Hope they enjoyed a couple of checks with the added couple of dollars. They will be standing in line at unemployment by months end.

So what does everybody think about flight attendant furloughs?! Reason I'm asking... I'm a recently recalled F/A and now scared that I"m going to lose my job AGAIN in Sept or sooner.... 🙁 I really dont know what to think... or what is going to happen... hoping that some of the Senior folks take a buy-out if offered or Voluntary so it doesn't affect me... but it's probably wishful thinking....
I would think that there are more then a few who will take a voluntary furlough. Especially if any kind of unemployment is involved.

Sit at home in PIT (or any where else for that matter) collecting unemployment or fight your way to PHL?

If we survive then come back in May(depending how things are structured).

Someone more versed? in the contract may have more info.

All those East newhires and recalls will be the ones clogging the unemployment lines.
What goes around comes around.
In all fairness the pain may be shared all around.

As much as many may not like it its not about east/west it's where the less profitable cuts come from.

I've been on the bad side of the equation before - close everything west of the Mississippi(which means west of PIT) and those days are gone.

I don't think that will happen again as shown by the PIT closure.

Furloughs will happen regardless of where you are based.

It's another "New Era".

"What can we cut to save money or go BK again " or liquidate in BK.

Maybe no service to Reading.

For the first time in 22 years I am not feeling the furlough pressure this time. 2 moves and 3 downgrades/upgrades have finally yielded a list of 16 under me FT and another 17 under me PT. The newbies are freaking out, but those of us that have been through it are trying to let them know that it does no good to worry about it until it actually happens. I realize there are bills to pay and its nerve wracking, but you'll make yourself sick worrying about it and you cant control it anyway. Just start planning for things to head south and cut back on things you dont have to have and save what you can and hope for the best.

I have a department we can furlough. Head count department? We worked short all last holiday season, hired like crazy in the first couple months of this year and now we're cutting back and they say we're overstaffed again even though they just hired 4 new people less than 2 months ago. I thought that the purpose of having a contract where the agents could work 3-6 hour shifts was to cut out the hiring/furloughing of agents? Instead management seemed hell bent on forcing only 4 hour shifts on everyone and hiring like crazy. Now we end up in the predicament we are in with being overstafffed instead of just letting some of our part timers work a couple more hours a week to cover what the newbies are doing now when we were busy and decreasing their hours as our flights get cut. Does not make sense to me, but what do I know?

I would have taken a voluntary furlough or a buyout and have been waiting for that for awhile. I couldn't wait. I have completed my last flight with good ole USAirways and I must admit I feel great. I can now enjoy tons of freedom that I feel I have not had in a long time. I can now concentrate on starting a family without the pressure of scheduling calling me in the middle of the night. I just knew for myself that I could not bear another PHL summer flying across the pond in the middle of the night after getting awoken from my sleep. I now look forward to a scheduling free summer, and wow, I am even going to spend Christmas with my family this year instead in a hotel room. I'll miss everyone, but this is right for me!

Flight Attendant no more!
It sounds to me like a part of you misses being an F/A a lot! Keep justifying and best wishes 🙂

I put in for the August VPLOA. I'm not sure if I'll be able to hold it. The inflight office has not determined how many will be offered. I don't know how many PIT commuters will put in for it. They all complain about how hard it is but watch none of them take VPLOA! No one seems to be able to just leave right now. Paul Kinsey will be in DCA today to determine the numbers and the future furloughs for September. They will either offer month-to-month or a block of months. I will bid for them all. Results for August will be posted on Monday.

I got the voluntary furlough for August. Apparently they only offered 15. Many disappointed PIT commuters..

Congrats on the VPLOA. You will enjoy it. I honestly can say, I do not miss flying at all, however, I do miss all my friends at US. Thank goodness for myspace for keeping in touch. Enjoy your month off, it will be a nice break for you.

I'm waiting for inflight to decide on VPLOAs for September and beyond. I know that they have no idea what they're doing. They didn't decide on how many VPLOAs to offer until the very last second. What the heck will 15 leaves do for the company? They need to offer hundreds so that the reserves who want to fly CAN!

My last bid month was June. There was so much open time and when I asked why there weren't more blocks, the company said they needed a certain % of reserves for each base. That is what finally made my decision clear. July was even more open time. Honestly, if they make a reserve a blockholder, they could guarantee they would fly 90 hours. Keep them on reserve and they are asking for sick calls. As long as I was in the bottom 20% in PHL I could guarantee myself that being on reserve was a never ending fact. I am lucky, I can take the rest of the year off from work and decide what I will do next. I have saved for that and my husband has a great job. My friend is on EXL from voluntary furlough. He went to work for Starbucks in DC and he is now in management with matched 401k and loves it. It is interesting to see how other companies treat their employees. I know he is one that will not be returning to US.

There was a PIT commuter looking at the VPLOA list with tears in her eyes. She was tired and said she didn't want to commute anymore. It's gotten really hard to get on a flight so she's been driving. I hope they offer more soon.
