What's new

Goota love the christian Right.

I am glad that through out time there have been great thinkers who were not constrained with the burden of religion. People such as Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, The men and women who had the urge to leave the bonds of earth and land on another celestial body (Moon, Mars ...?).

Because of people like them, we are no longer living in thatch huts, using flint and stone.

Perhaps is man kind can survive itself, in a few hundred years or so we will traveling among the stars.

Statically, I think there has to be other life out there. Given that there are literally billions of starts and no one knows how many planets it seems the hight of arrogance to assume we are alone. That and the fact that out of all claimed sightings, to think that not a single one is valid, seems to be unrealistic.

I think it would be fascinating to be able to come back in 1,000 years and see what we have learned.

As for the original topic again, why is it that no one has come out against what was done? The Christian extreme has remained silent. How can you expect people to stand up for you if you do not stand up for others?

The Bible also doesn't mention automobiles. Do you believe in those?
I don't believe in John Lennon either…

And you’re point is?

Thoughts and beliefs, where do they originate? Who influences you? Why?

If truth is God’s word and God doesn’t mentioned green space men or even yellow space men anywhere in his word, hmmm. If UFO’s and the aliens or whatever they carry are not worthy of even a one word mention in God’s word then that’s exactly how much credence I give them.

Oh but God's word is a "viewpoint" of several mortal men...not from God himself. Just think if you were to write a book of the Bible, 700...it would be the furthest thing from Christian that there could be...but you would claim that it is God's word. The Bible is poetry that depicts what certain mortal men believe to be God's will...not God's exact actions/words. Only those that are too simple-minded to read into the scripture and understand the true meaning take the words at face value. You also wouldn't be able to understand Poe or Wordsworth b/c you cannot grasp similies and poetic verse. The Bible is much more powerful than you give it credit for, 700...but you are too naive to really UNDERSTAND what it says b/c you only read words. Might as well bury your nose in a Mad Magazine b/c that is how you are treating the scripture.

Of course the MORTAL MEN that wrote "God's word" didn't mention life elsewhere in the universe. Of course they didn't think the Earth was round. Of course they felt that everything revolved around the Earth...but that is why their word is not directly "God's word". I don't expect you to understand.

GALILEO'S BIG MISTAKE
Galileo's big mistake was attempting to defend the Bible. He really loved the Bible but would have probably been better off if he hadn't dabbled in religion.

To quote Galileo: "To condemn as erroneous this particular proposition, would (if I am not mistaken) be a still greater detriment to the minds of men, since it would afford them occasion to see a proposition proved that it was heresy to believe."

Galileo knew the Church's interpretation of the Bible had to be altered because science was proving it wrong. At the time the Church felt that only they had supreme authority to interpret the Bible. The Church got pissed off when Galileo started teaching a modified interpretation of the Bible which wouldn't conflict with what he knew science was proving to be true. The new interpretation of the Bible was contrary to what the Church believed, and the Church had complete governing power to enforce its belief and sentence Galileo for heresy.

Paradoxically, those who today still uphold the Bible as the Literal Inerrant Word of God now claim the Bible all along said the earth moves around the sun.

Copernicus was the Polish astronomer who put forward the first mathematically based system of planets going around the sun. He attended various European universities, and became a Canon in the Catholic church in 1497. His new system was actually first presented in the Vatican gardens in 1533 before Pope Clement VII who approved, and Copernicus was urged to publish around this time. Copernicus was never under any threat of religious persecution - and was urged to publish both by Catholic Bishop Guise, Cardinal Schonberg, and the Protestant Professor George Rheticus. Copernicus referred sometimes to God in his works, and did not see his system as in conflict with the Bible.

Sir Isaac Newton, the author of classical physics and a devout Christian, interpreted the Book of Daniel, providing insights which are still profound today.

Sir Isaac Newton, upon whose work nearly all of classical physics is built, was a deeply religious Christian, who saw the hand of God in all things. To him, all of the great laws of physics which he discovered, were the laws of God that testify of his design. He would have been appalled to know that centuries later, atheists would be claiming that he had really discovered self-existent laws, which explain the universe so well that God is no longer needed in the equation.

"Einstein used to speak so often about God that I tend to believe he has been a disguised theologian," Frederick Duerrenmatt said. If Einstein were only a physicist, even a great one, he would not have been picked by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. His deeply eloquent ability to explain not only his physical theories, but also his philosophy, religion, and politics enabled people to have simultaneously two seemingly opposed views of him: as a cultural icon and as a full human being. He not only made clear his support of Judaism and the State of Israel, so much so that he was offered the Presidency of Israel, but he always had compassion for the innocent or the downtrodden; he answered letters from grade-schoolers and provided letters of support to groups who appealed as the underdog.

Religion

Wherever human beings travel, we bring our religions with us. "Godspeed, John Glenn," the farewell words spoken to the first American astronaut into orbit, exemplifies the characteristic human drive to carry faith into space.

Many astronauts who are religious have spoken of finding their faith strengthened by the experience of traveling in space. The ability to look back on Earth as a small blue planet, and to see the fragility of life and human existence, is an experience that brings many space travelers closer to the creator. The astronauts of the Apollo 8 mission, orbiting the Moon for the very first time in 1968, broadcast back to Earth a reading from the book of Genesis on Christmas day, in the belief that the passage discussing the creation of the world expressed their feelings of the awe and majesty of creation.

While some astronauts are agnostic or atheist, others have been highly religious. Astronauts from most of the major religions on Earth have been represented in space, including representatives of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, one of the two astronauts who were the first men to land on the Moon, brought with him a small vial of consecrated wine and a tiny piece of communion wafer, in order to celebrate the holy sacrament on the surface of the Moon.

For other astronauts, the spiritual experience of space is not expressed in the terms of formal religion. After landing on the Moon with Apollo 14, Astronaut Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences to reconcile the spiritual and humanistic values of religious traditions with scientific insights. The spiritual insight granted from spaceflight, and seeing Earth from orbit without political boundaries or petty human conflict, is profound. This insight has been tagged "the overview effect" by author Frank White.

I never said they were not religious, I said that I was glad they were not constrained by the burden of religion. They were willing to say that the church could be wrong and was not infallible. The world ended up not being flat, and it was not the center of the universe.

You Gar and other nonbelievers on here, most, are having your day in the sun but when that sun falls from the sky and sets you afire while believers look on in pity, then and only then will your kind see truth. It will be too late then and what a shame, this is why Christians preach, it’s only to save your souls but regardless you mock them. This too was foretold in what you consider the book of allegory.

this is why Christians preach,
You do preach a lot, but I haven't come across any posts where you are preaching the word of God. You damn a lot of people and judge most of us...doesn't the bible have some things like "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", or "Judge not, lest ye be judged". Or what about the one that says "love thy neighbor as thyself"...if what we read on these boards are any example, you hold a lot of self hatred inside you.

And here we have the resident head doc....picking and choosing what the Good Book says, that is called, agenda, yours and not truth.

You don’t know me. If my heart were truly filled with hate I couldn’t do what I do in this life. The truth is extremely hard to accept because it carrier a weight sinners can’t bear and why we NEED the Holy Spirit.

Sit on it sister...and you Gar...I know Dell personally like up close..... Therefore, bite me

My favorite was when some verses were quoted to him and this was how he responded.

Apparently, he only likes to use the Bible to hit OTHER people on the head... but cannot handle it when it is used on him.

All that you'll know is how many periods there are on page 148 and what color the cover of your Bible is. You don't know a damn thing about being a Christian...or any other true religious person. You use it as an excuse to force your bigotted beliefs...not religious convictions. Take a hike 700...you're a phony that preaches hatred and blasphemy. Everyone here can see that (including God) except for you. Preach your heresy somewhere else like an LA street corner b/c you are little more than the homeless guy with a cardboard sandwich board preaching the end of the world.

700IAM -

It's clear to everyone what's in your heart...a whole lot of bigotry and hate. Case closed.
Just look at his profile and tell me I didn't peg him.

Wonder what food he eats, soul food🙂

Hmmm...you're forever using b/c! What is that, Before Christ?

Aha...NOR DO YOU KNOW ME...yet you have not only taken on the role of "head doc"...you are assuming the role of GOD HIMSELF...and you have condemned me and most everybody else damned to hell because they do not share your "understanding" of what God has said. Please...how do you KNOW that what you spew is the actual intent of God and NOT the views of a MAN who interpreted the bible to fit his views? Child abusers use the bible to justify the beatings of their children...is that a proper interpretation?
