Important Questions

Wow...you sure seem to have an ax grind.

How about using PERFORMANCE instead of race, age, religion, or seniority?? What a concept!!! If all that it takes for me to move up is to keep my heart beating and keep making the same drive in to work, then that is the dream, man, and maybe I should join a union. Fortunately, though, my drive to perform well is what keeps me moving and doesn't make me just work hard enough to keep my job for another day so that I gain seniority.

I am in no way saying that anybody here doesn't work hard but a seniority-only system sure doesn't inspire anyone to work hard...just stay alive. Just think...if we used seniority to run our government, we would have ended up with Jesse Helms as president long ago. But then again...guess the current alternative isn't any better.

If you do not perform to standards, your promo is taken away. Simple. Eliminates the ol' favoritism which is so pervasive in mgmt. I know I was there for 15+ yrs. I then elected security over the whim of some a-hole whoose daughter married some so & so.
What's wrong with keeping your nose clean and doing your job for a decent wage and degree of security. I know, I know there's always BK but mgmt goes too.
Congress is run by seniority. Who are the ldrs of the power committees? All the old timers But hey that's for a different board....

Like who would want an affirmative action Dr to do their heart surgery?

Bogus argument (and smacks of racism). I also do not want a Doctor who was assigned to my case simply because he has been paying dues longer than anyone else.

There is the story about the AFL-CIO officer who was in Vegas and decided to visit one of the legal brothels out of town. He walked up to the door of the first brothel and was greeted by the madam.

Union Guy: Is this a union brothel?
Madam: No, it is not.
Union: Well, how do you split the proceeds?
Madam: House keeps 90%, girls get 10%
Union: That's outrageous oppression of the working class. I'll never spend a dime in this place.

He goes to the next brothel...
Union Guy: Is this a union brothel?
Madam: No, it is not.
Union: Well, how do you split the proceeds?
Madam: We split 50-50 with the girls.
Union: That's better than the last place, but still not fair. The girls are doing all the work.

He goes to the next brothel...
Union Guy: Is this a union brothel?
Madam: Yes it is.
Union: Well, how do you split the proceeds?
Madam: The girls get all the money. Then when the rent and utility bills come in, we assess each of the girls a share of the costs.
Union: That's how it should be. I'm giving you my business.
(With that he looks around and points at a gorgeous 25 year old blond.)
Union: I'll take the blond over there.
Madam: (Pointing at an 80-year old crone in the corner) I'm sure you would, but Ethel over there has seniority.

You should write a novel. When you do I will have you sign it. Then sell it on ebay! 😉

Nah, don't start calling people racist. Affirmative action is just one of the many subjective reasons for favoritism in treatment by management. Many others were listed, too.

Seniority is objective and can't be faniggled. Everything else is subjective, even that nebulous chimera, "performance", and can be fadiddled all over the map.

I work for people who have no idea what performance is, having never performed themselves. I also work for people who were good performers and know performance when they see it. If all my bosses were in the second group, I wouldn't feel the need for a union or seniority. Unfortunately, the second group is smaller in number and has less influence than the political connivers in the first group.
