So i noticed that delta is doing some hiring of mechanics again. I worked for NWA from 97 to 05 before they kicked me to the street. I am debating sending my resume in and just wondered if anyone had some in-site as to how things are looking right now. I really dont want to get hired only to hit the street again 6 months later. Also what would starting pay be, the posting is for LEAD AMT 2 - LINE MAINTENANCE.

Thanks

I like my job and there is a ton of work right now. How is the workload going to be in a year? Who knows.

Lead Mechanics are topped out on the payscale plus a little more; somewhere around 5600/mo. Just a little info on being selected for a lead job: They normally do NOT hire someone off the street directly to a Lead Mechanic position. Lead positions are usually awarded to current employees. I don't believe that is the official policy at Delta, but the managers I have worked for follow that rule exclusively.

Would they post that opening on their web site if its just open internally?

We have a whole bunch of Sock Monkeys (Support Mech)/Tech Helpers. That have their A-P tickets that are more than likely first in line(after recalls from DL/NWA) per DLs SOP.

What I heard was that it was a legal thing that these jobs were posted inside and outside of the company, but the general rule is what you stated.

Back in the "good old days" the AMTs would vote for the leads.

Really? Was there any sort of "actual" criteria you had to base your vote on, or just "so and so is a good guy."

How did that work out?

The top three guys/gals in vote totals got interviews for the job. Jobs awarded based on the interviews which are based on Technical and situation questions, "with due regard for senority."

The vast majority of the leads I worked for were good.

I remember that.

It was 49% mechanic vote and 51% manager selection.

That was in the Western merger days...

I wouldn't hold your hopes up on being hired by DL if you have worked in a union company. They are taking the NW mechanics in the merger but they historically have not hired mechanics off the street if they ever worked in a union regardless of experience. We have a lot of former DL managers working as managers here at FedEx and they pretty much hire other DL guys or other non-union guys and it is obvious too. The former NW guys get grilled pretty good in the intervew for the line and a lot have to go though the hanger or bid out to a line station to get a fair shot at a line job in MEM. I figure the former DL managers have bought their corporate culture of DL to FX

Of course, it is 'illegal' to do that so I am sure that does not happen...

to my understanding, the last hiring for FA 100 thousand applied for 1 thousand positions and those who successfully made it online.. came from various backgrounds, including former union represented carriers. such as some from the airlines that went bankrupt, those furloughed, ext..

so go figure?

Quite a few of my brothers and myself from IAM-AW local 709 would beg to differ,When we were laid off delta hired us (and some who were not laid off).
