Major Announcement Concerning Charlotte Air Svc.

You knew it had to happen sooner or later. Fares will be coming down . USA320 whats that red stuff in the water? Savy

Seems to me that a lot of people here are overreacting to this announcement. Though there will certainly be some impact on yields in a couple of markets, it's not like AirTran's coming in and setting up a hub. AirTran did not really change the playing field in Philly and I doubt it will significantly change the playing field in Charlotte, either. It's probably a good move for AirTran to begin some service to BWI and ATL...but UAIR will certainly match fares and probably increase service to defend its turf. Nice announcement for CLT. It was certain to happen at some point and may stimulate some new traffic, which would be good for both carriers.

Anyone consider such a move on AirTran's part is in response to our increased service into ATL...?

America West just recently joined the CLT Chamber of Commerce...

While I agree this certainly won't kill US, it will damage yields in about 35 market pairings from CLT.

Keep in mind that US will have to match Airtran in all of Airtran's connecting markets. So if Airtran offers CLT-ATL-PNS for $99, USAirways can't continue charging $299 for the nonstop flight. Customers won't pay that much more for the convenience of a nonstop.

Rumor also has it that FL has looked into converting a few of their LGA slots over to CLT service.

If they connect some dots, this could be interesting... First ATL and BWI, followed by IND, MDW, and probably MCO...

It was just announced on the charlotte news. Airtran will start May 4th with 4 flights a day. Two flights from charlotte to Atlanta and two flights from Charlotte to Baltimore. They will use the gate that ATA had.

Airtran is supposed to be announcing a new city pretty soon. Maybe they'll try to get in CLT before WN does.

SKY HIGH states: DLFlyer is correct.

AirTran headed to Charlotte

SAN FRANCISCO-- Low-fare carrier AirTran Airways, searching for new markets as it expands its fleet, is headed to Charlotte.
AirTran Airways headed to Charlotte

AirTran, based in Orlando, Fla., plans to start the flights May 4 from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. It will offer four daily flights to Atlanta and two flights to Baltimore on its 117-seat jets, a source familiar with the plans said. The carrier will operate a gate vacated by bankrupt ATA Airlines.

Justaumechanic:

LCC's have over 500 new aircraft orders and options and these aircraft need to be deployed. The only way US Airways can compete with these companies is to have a competitive cost structure.

When it does, it will not matter what the LCC's do because US Airways will be able to compete.

I find your constant "jabs" at me interesting and you are obviously a bitter person. That's too bad because the only person this hurts is yourself. If US Airways fails, so be it, however, I would be more concerned about your self than me.

Best of luck in the future.

Best regards,

Ahhh, the dreaded "I'm rubber, you're glue" defense!

Actually, USAirways has not matched AirTran's prices for service to markets that US serves non-stop and AirTran has only connecting service.
Take PIT - TPA for next week, $1138 non-stop on USAir, $321 on AirTran, $344 on IndyAir.

It appears that with AirTran from PIT, USAirways only matches (and in some cases undercuts) AirTran's non-stop service to ATL & MCO.

The same situation exists with IndyAir, US matches only PIT-IAD.
Take PIT-BOS, >$1,000 non-stop on USAir, and <$300 on Indy or UAL via IAD.

This frustrates loyal USAir flyers like myself who would love to fly non-stop but simply not justify the $700+ premium.
I could easily stomach $250 premium, and would even (grudgingly) accept a non-upgradable fare.

In reality, US is not matching even the DL fares in some key markets from its hubs like BOS-CLT. Whether DL or FL, US must be competitive with all carriers from its markets or will surely lose passengers and revenue.
