could it be Lakefield is taking a larger interest in the day to day operations? I don't ever recall seeing a press release announcing Bruce's departure from USAirways. Isn't he still co-chairman of the company?

While Parker being the CEO is ultimately responsible for what happens at Usairways, I do think that he has some real MORONS working under him. As stated in an earlier post I don't believe he gets correct information if any at all about the airline. Case in point is during the crew news session a month or two back when he was asked about food not being served in first class while offered for sale in coach. He had NOOOO idea and even stated that he knew he'd come back a few weeks later with the problem still there. I know that as a CEO you have bigger tasks at hand but still believe a good CEO knows a good deal about each department and the state of them all. He really seems out of the loop about a lot. I don't think he'd be the one leaving though. As for the big announcement maybe they will announce the worlds best beverage cart and cart topper in the industry. 🙄

Hi Everyone,

Your favorite company communications guy chiming in. Doug isn't resigning and has said publicly several times that he's here for the long haul.

Hope everyone is winding down after the busy holiday week. Please drop me a line if I can be of help to you.

Thanks,

Thanks Morgan ..... I'll take Doug over the last ten guys we've had here anyday. I see slow progress at lower levels. Sounds like they're going to be utilizing non-union managers properly in the future and there's more and more accountability in place everyday. That's were a good operation starts.

I guess IM breaking with this board tradition .... I just wrote something positive

Mr. Durrant,

As the US Airways communication guy, can you say whether or not there will be a big announcement on that date?

Sincerely,

Don't hold your breath Gordon's behind the DL/UA deal .....

United Sees Support for Consolidation

BOSTON — The head of United Airlines' parent company said Tuesday he no longer feels like a voice in the wilderness in arguing that airlines must consider consolidation to withstand competitive challenges, including rising fuel costs.

"We at United have been talking about this for the past three to four years, and there's been very little company among us," UAL Corp.'s Glenn Tilton told reporters after delivering a speech to business leaders at the Boston College Chief Executives Club.

"Now, we have virtually everybody saying the same thing," Tilton said, noting that several rival airline CEOs suggested on third-quarter conference calls that the time may be right for industry mergers and acquisitions. "I think we've come a long way, when you consider that early on, we were the only people saying that."

United has been the focus of recent industry merger rumors, including the possibility of pairing with Delta Air Lines Inc.

Tilton wouldn't say whether he or other executives at the nation's second-largest carrier have been in any talks with Delta or other potential partners.

But he did say that he understood the rationale for a United-Delta pairing _ a case that a hedge fund made Nov. 16 in a presentation to other investors in the two airlines. The presentation was by Gordon Bethune, an adviser to hedge fund Pardus Capital Management LP and former chief executive of Continental Airlines.

"I think that's Gordon Bethune's assessment of the combination of companies that have very few overlaps," Tilton told reporters. "So on that basis, you would say that any company combination that has relatively few overlaps is going to have fewer personnel redundancies, and fewer job losses, and certainly no worries about redundant service to small communities or medium-size communities."

But Tilton declined to comment on whether he thought a United-Delta pairing would be a good fit.

Asked why no airline merger proposals had surfaced recently despite growing pressure to cut expenses amid high fuel costs, Tilton said, "It's a very difficult thing. Multiple constituencies have to agree that it's appropriate."

Industry consolidation "would be a plus, yes, absolutely," said Tilton, chairman, president and chief executive of Chicago-based UAL.

On Nov. 14, an official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that UAL and Delta had been discussing a combination that would keep the United name and the corporate headquarters in Chicago. Delta and United later denied they had any merger talks.

Since emerging from bankruptcy in February 2006, United has restructured to trim costs and reduce domestic flight capacity to ensure its planes in the air are fuller. But analysts have worried about the carrier's exposure to rising fuel prices and higher-than-expected maintenance costs.

Tilton's speech Tuesday focused on the need for greater investment to improve U.S. aviation infrastructure, including air traffic control.

He said obsolete aviation systems and outmoded industry thinking jeopardize the U.S. airline industry's health.

"In an industry with a long history of value destruction, creating sustainable shareholder value is likely to be more difficult than restructuring," Tilton said. "Our ambition, to the benefit of all stakeholders, is to do just that."

When Franke left (you want him back???) he put Parker in charge. If Parker leaves (eventually), my bet is the board puts Kirby in just because it's a low risk bet at the top.
