The 2 originally planned to be leased Swiss 332s (via ILFC) were recently canceled. I do not believe these aircraft were ever seriously being considered for China (just whatiffed ?) and were canceled well Before the DOT PHL-PEK delay request was approved. The purchased units delivery dates have not (yet) been changed and are still scheduled to start in mid 2009. However, I understand that Parker, et al, are still planning to re-schedule some aircraft deliveries on the basis that fuel cost increases will delay planned route expansion. I do not know if any of these reshedules will involve the first 4 (or later) 332s. A ? has to be that since the delayed China route is only 20 months until startup - or abandonment, what aircraft will they use, since the A350s are not due until late 2013 or 2014? I DO NOT BELIEVE they will actually ever use a severely weight restricted and range limited 332 for a polar route. Ignoring the logistical nightmare of fuel shortcomings, such a flight would likely be a never ending financial disaster. The current US - Airbus contract has provisions to substitute 34xs for 332s, if Parker ever chooses to exercise that option. The only other (reasonable) aircraft capable of PHL-PEK is the Boeing 777-200ER. My bet is the strategy is to hope/plan for the availability of short term (3-4 year), acceptably priced leases on several 343s, as Boeing begins 787s deliveries.
