World Famous’ Spec Ad Gets Picked Up by US Airways
Commercial Created by Seattle Design & Production Studio Highlights World Destinations
DMN Newswire--2008-1-7--It’s not unusual for directors, editors and others artists involved in the production of television commercials to create spec work to show off their talent, but it’s rare for such projects to actually appear on the air. An exception to that rule is a new US Airways spot that was created as a spec project by Seattle design and editorial studio World Famous.

The commercial features animated contrails swooping in graceful arcs around a parked US Airways jet, with each contrail representing a different destination. The scene resolves into a 3D map of the world depicting the airline’s network and ends with the tagline, “Where you need to be.â€

World Famous creative directors Alan Nay and Tony Fulgam came up with the idea for the spot while editing a regional US Airways commercial. “We fell in love with some of the supplemental footage of the planes and decided to build a spec spot around it,†recalls Nay. “We ended up with a great brand piece that shows a beautiful ballet of planes and highlights all the destinations that company serves.â€

Nay and Fulgam were only intending to demonstrate their ability to take a commercial from concept through delivery, but when they posted the piece on their website it was spotted by Louis Moses, executive creative director of Moses Anshell, US Airways’ advertising agency, who brought it to the attention of his client. The airline was so impressed, it decided to make the spot a part of its national advertising campaign.

World Famous produced the spot using only its in-house resources. That included writing the script, creating the animation and editing it. “We took huge pieces of metal and made them dance,†says Fulgam. “The music and editing are very important; they tie it together in an important way and helped us hit the right emotional note.â€

“Our intent was to communicate the message about all the places that US Airways flies in a way that has a very fluid feel,†Nay adds.

Nay and Fulgam were pleased with the results because they felt that it showed what their company could do in concept development and demonstrated their design, animation and editorial skills. The fact that the spot is now on the air is icing on the cake. “We had a great time putting the piece together,†Nay asserts,†and we are so overjoyed that it’s going to air, we can hardly keep our pants on.â€

World Famous is located at 911 E. Pike Street, #325, Seattle, Washington 98122. For more information, call (206) 328-3881 or visit www.worldfamousinc.com.

N831AW to Tokyo? Isn't that a A319? Get ready, 757's and A319's with drop tanks! A319 would be ideal for an Asian trip, because that is all the seats they will need. Who wants to sit in a US plane for 12+ hours, I know not I. I can't even do it on a 5 Hour flight.

The commercial is something truly beyond the scope of Tempe management. It has appeal and some sense of being a true airline. With that being said this was nothing more than an unsolicited project. I am sure when put together the producers either assumed we flew to Japan or tied it in with our star alliance partners. Management either did not notice it; or left it in to show we can get you to Asia. I don't see Japan in our near future.

The reason you see a 319 to Tokyo is because the commercial was done “On Specâ€￾; the agency that created it had no guarantee of ever being paid for their work.

You can’t get much cheaper than that. Just more of the same from Tempe.

Is there another way to see the commercial?

Seems like a cool idea, certainly better than an ice cream company VP blathering in front of an airplane. Or Seth.... ugh...just the memory of that gives me cramps.

The only thing... uh, an Airbus 319? Makes it kind of laughable... If the ad is really good, fly these people to PHL and let them film an A330, they are constantly broken.

Hello,
Tony Fulgham here of World Famous. It seems you folks stumbled onto some of our work. I just wanted to confirm that the version of the commercial you saw was indeed spec. Unfortunately the original spec piece went out with our press release instead of the one that we had changed up for the client. We're really happy that people are responding positively to the work. We just want to apologize for any Tokyo confusion. What it comes down to is that we liked the way the word looked. That's all. Here's what ended up in the final version.

Thank You for the reply and your interest.

If you have been to Tokyo(NRT) you would know NW has several Airbus aircraft based there to bring connecting traffic in so it is not unreasonable to think an A319/320 would be at NRT. Before everyone jumps me I know US is not starting a hub in NRT. I am merely pointing out that a A319 is not unthinkable at NRT.
