OK, so while travelling through PHL over the past four days, I noticed that the boarding lounges in B & C concourses are being spruced up. Now don't get me wrong, they REALLY need some sprucing, but can we not hire designers to come up with something imaginative and attractive? Not to mention a design that can be easily kept clean?

The gray washable wall paper in PHL is being replaced with monotonous white paint with a stark logo/wordmark. Anyone want to guess how long a wall in PHL (or any busy airport for that matter) painted white will stay clean? Is this our new corporate standard? Am I the only one to think about things like this? Why would the company choose to fund a refurbishment that will look filthy in a matter of weeks? Why can we not hire industrial designers who would actually take things like this into consideration?

It is all about $$$$$. It is the US Airways way. Do it once on the cheap and re-do it several times......just look at the heritage airplanes as a perfect example.

I haven't seen the new gates yet, so I'll reserve judgement. But it seems there have been alot of decisions lately coming from Tempe that have been long on stupidity and short on brain power. Everything seems to have to be redone. The ETC....need I say more? It worked just fine for US East, until Tempe started tinkering with it. These 3 new 757s going to Europe are nothing more than a joke. All of the heritage planes had to be repainted. The website and frequent flyer program sound to me like they've become a fiasco. And now our leaders seem to be cashing in and filling their piggy banks. Things that make you go Hmmm!!! 🙁

Well talk about dumb ideas.......lrts replace the carpeting in the gates then paint the walls.....now that was smart.

I would paint then carpet but then again im just an hourly worker

When you pull up dirty carpet.....doesn't that throw around a lot of dust.....that could adhere to freshly painted walls?

How about pull up the carpet, paint and then recarpet.....

They could hire top notch international designers and you folks out east would still not be happy. Gawd give it a chance! The world has changed since you had industry leading contracts and there is no going back.

Why are the 3 757's going to Europe a "joke?" I have flown them twice and they are actually pretty comfortable. Am I missing something? <_<

The 757's are a great addition and are working just fine, usual tweaking when new aircraft arrive.. Be thankful we are going forward!!!

Jmm,
please only speak about what you know, being that you have only been with the company for nearly 3 months, i hardly doubt you have any idea what the East has been through nor the West......... began looking for a crashpad in LGA yet?

I am entitled to my opinion as are you. I do know what I have experienced first hand and have read on this site. I could care less what the east has been through. The past is the past and while I believe that most in east are giving the group in Tempe a chance, the opinions expressed here are disgusting. The sense of entitlement by some here is amazing. Times have changed, unions are less powerful, management is richer, workers are poorer. This is a fact throughout corporate America these days not just as USAirways. Is it a change for the good, NO, but that is how it is right now.

And, why the he11 would I look for a crashpad in LGA? I am not going anywhere. I firmly beleive that the fences in PHX will be up much longer than anyone anticipates.

I dont see where anyone in this thread brought any of your concerns up until this. They are talking about the airport, keeping it looking nice and clean and doing it right the first time so (the extra money saved by not having to redo it again and again) can be better spent on other things.
We just redid our counter breakroom. When we started we discussed what colors we wanted and how the room should look. In the areas where all the finger prints were (around the light switch, tv, computers, wall next to the door) we decided to go darker blue so the prints dont show. The rest of the room (both main walls where no one puts their hands) we did in a lighter gray. We could have done the white thing like is reported in PHL. It would have looked great (the first week) until the hand prints started again and no one took the time or effort to clean it and it would soon look worse than the breakroom did before we started.
Any public area where hands are (backdrop area, people leaning on the counter) should be in a darker color so it hides the dirt (thats the reason a lot of boarding areas have brown, dark grey, dark blue or multipatterned carpets). If they want a bright white to put the logo on, put it on the top of the counter only, but everything else should be darker and easy to clean. Maybe metal plating thats silver and easy to clean with windex? Why bother taking an area and doing a makeover if in a month or two its going to look as trashy as it is now? This is the concern of the thread (unless I just blinked and missed a post about unions, entitlement, etc?)

JMM, calm down, dude. My point was that the old gray textured wall paper looked fine, it was just tattered in a few areas. There was really no need to do a complete overhaul of the walls, just repair what was in need of fixing. PHL gates were put in the US Airways (East) corporate standard in 1997. Test mock ups of gates and ticket counters were done in SFO to gage customer perception. Customers were interviewed and voila, East ticket counters and gate areas got the chosen look. That has not been done this time. Someone in Tempe simply said, "paint the walls white and slap up a logo".

Charlotte's gate areas look fine (albeit the carpeting in pretty horrible), so why change it? Pittsburgh looks fine. Boston and Washington look fine. Why completely redo them? Since there are far more US East stations, why not simply change West only stations to the existing corporate standard and do necessary repairs in East stations?

Hmm, I do see your point. I felt attacked early in the thread and went off. Please understand it is just frustrating as heck to see constant bi*ching, I mean constant about anything that anyone tries to change. Change is the only constant. And, I get frustrated at times. I happen to love my job and love being based in PHX and doing my job. All this negativity makes me scared for the future of a company that I actually enjoy working for. So, I get defensive quickly.
