What's new

No more mainline to PVD

Not true! The DFW airport press release mistakenly confounded the two moves. The AA press release had it correct -- Love Field expansion separate from the pulldown at several airport. Apparently, DFW airport is more steamed about Love Field than AA.
per AA....

Mr. Jeff Fegan
Chief Executive Officer
DFW International Airport
P.O. Box 619428
DFW Airport, Texas 75261

Dear Jeff,

I regret to inform you that American and American Eagle will be announcing a series of changes to its flights at DFW International Airport. To be clear, these are not changes we are eager to make, rather they are decisions we've made reluctantly in light of challenging airline economic conditions in general and, in particular, as a result of our need to prevent the loss of AA customers to Southwest's new flights to Missouri from Love Field. As you have correctly stated many times, relaxation of the Wright Amendment restrictions will have the unavoidable impact of diverting customer traffic and flights from DFW to Love Field.

The schedule changes we are making include a decrease in frequencies in some markets and an end to all nonstop service in others. Here are the specifics of the changes:

Eliminating all nonstop service to 6 destinations from DFW: Long Beach (LGB) 4 flights/day
Providence, RI (PVD) 1 flight/day
Lima, Peru (LIM) 1 flight/day
Toledo (TOL) 1 flight/day
Green Bay (GRB) 1 flight/day
Rochester, MN (RST) 1 flight/day

Reducing frequencies to 7 destinations from DFW: Flights Per Day
Current
Frequency Reductions New
Frequency
St. Louis (STL) 13 5 8
Kansas City (MCI) 12 5 7
Austin (AUS) 16 2 14
San Antonio (SAT) 15 3 12
College Station (CLL) 6 3 3
Cincinnati (CVG) 6 1 5
Tyler (TYR) 7 3 4

Please understand that American Airlines has not, and will not, abandon our efforts in support of the Wright Amendment and all those in North Texas who want to keep DFW International Airport strong, vibrant and growing. DFW International Airport is the region's greatest economic engine and was always intended to be the home for all commercial air service in Dallas/Fort Worth. American remains intensely devoted to that principle.

We realize that these operational decisions come at a difficult time for DFW International Airport. Again, these are not decisions we had hoped to make. However, it is essential that we make these moves to ensure American remains competitive.

If you have any questions, we will be happy to schedule a discussion at your convenience.

Sincerely,
Tim Ahern
Vice President - DFW Airport
American Airlines

[sigh...]

Do we have to re-hash this argument again?

Some of the cuts announced in Ahern's letter (which is not a press relase...) were made "in light of challenging airline economic conditions in general," i.e. LIM, LGB, TOL, GRB, and PVD.

Others were "as a result of our need to prevent the loss of AA customers to Southwest's new flights to Missouri from Love Field" i.e. STL,MCI,AUS, and SAT.

The two halves of that sentence are mutually exclusive as I read it.
