NW outsourced stations

Here's an article about BUF closing...

...And one about BDL doing the same...

From the Courant:

"At Bradley, some employees expressed particular bitterness about being laid off just as Northwest was to start its first direct service between Bradley and Europe, a move expected to boost revenue. The day officials announced the route at a Hartford press conference, Oct. 11, the airline's employees at Bradley attended meetings about unemployment benefits, they said."

That seems to be about how it's going (on average) so far: 1 or 2 people bump to other stations, 1 or 2 stay on, and the rest take the $$$ and run...

Here's an interesting article about what the outsourced NW employees in TPE are doing to combat NW management...

Axed Northwest staff use legal means to safeguard job rights

A total of 20 employees of the Taiwan branch of Northwest Airlines Inc. -- who were forcibly discharged in late October -- will take legal action to safeguard their working rights after failing to reach settlement terms with the management of the U.S. carrier, informed sources said.

Following the exposure of a labor-management dispute in October, the U.S. carrier issued a statement to lay off 20 employees in late October. The employees were mostly responsible for airport counter and airplane landing and take-off operations.

The failure to reach settlement terms came despite the Department of Labor under the Taipei City Government intervening to coordinate the settlement talks.

Representing the labor side at the talks, the Confederation of Taipei Trade Unions said that managerial staff of the company received a pay raise in June this year, but just two months later, the firm spread the message that it would lay off low-echelon employees on grounds that the firm was "suffering" from operating losses and running in the red. And in late October, the company discharged 20 employees.

At the coordination meeting, executives of Northwest Airlines said the firm now operates only one flight per day and therefore doesn't need so many employees. The company has farmed out the counter operations to China Airlines.

Northwest Airlines also pledged to give better severance payment terms than set in the Labor Standards Law, but the laid-off employees demanded that their working rights be resumed. As a result, both sides failed to reach any consensus on the matter.

But officials with the Confederation of Taipei Trade Unions said that Northwest Airlines has been operating a daily flight from Taipei to the U.S. for quite a long time, and that the airlines also operates only one flight a day from Bangkok and Singapore each, yet there were no plans to lay off employees in those places.

The officials also cited statistics compiled by the airline as indicating that the company did post earnings in the first six months of the year, and also projected a profitable year for 2006.

Accordingly, laying off the 20 employees on grounds of "operating losses" and "downsizing operations" can hardly be justified, the officials continued.

Of the 20 employees laid off, as many as 17 have served at the company for over 16 years, and one of them would have qualified for retirement once given working rights for two more months. Accordingly, the officials stressed, Northwest Airlines was suspected of maliciously laying off its employees.

Furthermore, Northwest Airlines did promise to transfer the laid off employees to China Airlines to handle the same counter registration work at an hourly pay of NT$175.

The former employees said that the company just aimed to get the said work done at a lower cost. They stressed that they would resort to legal procedures to demand resumption of their working rights.

After our strike I heard about a plan by nwa to replace the seasoned ticket counter staff with kiosks AND the existing skycaps. They were also going to offer the counter staff new jobs with the skycaps ( at a substantial pay reduction). I know the uproar was pretty loud and they canned the idea for now. Does anyone know if they are contesting UE benefits for the closed stations?

They did, but only after they lost an arbitration case on the matter.

Officially, they've said that "UI benefits vary from state to state. It is the employee's responsibility to file for UI benefits."
Having said that, I'm sre they'll find a way to contest someone's claims.
