What's new

NW outsourced stations

Robbed--

There were a few cities whose closing dates were pushed back, ABE being one of them. I *think* the last day is supposed to be Jan. 13th, but I'll have to look and see. NW is having a harder time than previously thought lining up vendors in certain cities.

It seems like the majority of folks (so far) are not following the work to other cities. Out of round 1 (MOT, AUS, and BZN), I think 3 or 4 employees total exercised their seniority into other stations. Round 2 (SDF, CVG,BDL) saw about 8 or 9 exercise as of yesterday.

Take a look at the NW website and see all the jobs that
are posted. It shows you how difficult it is for NW to
find any new employees. NW is advertising for part time
ramp and customer service personnel at 9.00/hour.

Outsourced stations employees do not seem to be bumping
anywhere. Imagine how difficult it is for the vendors to
find ANYONE to work. Any news on how the stations are
performing since NW no longer has any staff?

True. Our station held an open house last week...and of the handul that showed up, only 2 accepted an offer of employment.

One then bailed out, and the other is going since the earliest they can get a new hire class set up is 19.Dec.06.

I know these are PT (or second) jobs, but when you're looking for work, who wants to wait 5 weeks to start?

Meanwhile ZW held an job fair at the same time, and now has 4 brand spanking new employees-and they start at less per hour.

True, so far. I got to see the bump lists the bid desk is issuing daily yesterday....Still running at about 3 or 4 people per station on average, though quite a few MIA folks bumped across town to FLL...

Kev,

Now that the AMFA contract has been agreed to by the membership, several of the mechanics that were on strike who are over 55 years old or are close to turning 55, are thinking of applying for open ESE positions with the intent of getting pack on the NWA payroll.

Once they are on payroll, they would retire after their first day on the job or quit upon reaching age 55 - just so they would not have to pay a large penalty for retiring before age 55.

Sounds like an excellent plan to me.

thanks exnw i know that the folks here at abe work a total of three flts thelast being like at 5p or so then nothing till like 10p

Had the same thought, I just don't see how it would work.
Big Daddy never had that thought. He said flat out he can't work with scabs. Plus he figures he's a strapling & healthy young man (*ahem*) and he thinks he has another 25 years of work ahead of him..... why waste your time at at place where their first goal is to irradicate all employees.

If we had the technology to have remote control planes without pilots, we would be the first to have it.

Here's an interesting first person account of the outsourcing of CVG.
The end of days in CVG.

The opinion of the CVG employee was right on the money.
I agree 100 percent with the part of working on the
transition team to train the replacements.

By doing this you are essentially buying into the NW
plan and helping them to achieve their goal. The sad part
is those cooperating in the transition do not realize
they are being used and once the 69 stations are
replaced there will be nothing left for them.

Are those on the transition team still part of the
union or are they considered "management".

NW is looking for quantity, not quality.

You have more quality control if you have employees within the same company. Now with $7.85 an hour, many people will think it's not worth it. So the outsourcing company will have this eternal rotating door and be left with people who live with their parents at age 40, college kids, and people who can't find any other jobs.

It's funny, because my friend in HR at WWFS was telling me "off the record" 4? 5 yrs ago they were losing money because of all the fines they incurred at various stations (esp. YVR) Their strategy for retaining employees is to give them free medical and do this "team" meeting to make them all feel wanted and special every month.

Nice piece, thanks for sharing.

They are temporarily considered management. They are on contracts that run from 1-11 weeks (for each station they go to) that pay $1000 per week. Two people from my station-1 ESL and one CSA have left to do this.

Excellent article. I couldnt' have written it any better myself. Although I worked for another airline in a different city, it is all the same. I could change the Airline and station names, and all else would apply just the same. This has been the fate that a lot of us have met at all Airlines all over the counrty.
We were dedicated employees for many years that took pride in out jobs, only to be tossed out like trash by our company.
