Old base: ORF- Piedmont (from what I have been told)

Sthrnboy,

Save yourself (edit your original post) and do it quickly. Pittsburgh has an "h" at the end of it. We're a bit psycho about our 'burgh and that's a no-no.

No longer bases:

ORF, ATL, ILM, GSO, INT, MIA, SYR, BWI, TYS

I'm sure I've missed a couple

OK and now stay tuned for another episode of "Educate the Stupid Frequent Flyer"

What's a crew base?

PB,
It is my pleasure to respond to you for the first time.
A crew base as several hundred other people on this board will tell you, is where the F/A's and Pilots are based and commence work. Many people these days commute to their base to begin work.

Roanoke, Va. was a base? Past Bases, BWI, GSO?

Don't forget BWI which was a MAJOR base as recently as the beginning of the decade. All of MetroJet was based there. Closed in 2001 or 2002. The New York base opened in 2000 when the US Airways Shuttle was integrated into mainline operations.

Others...

Baltimore
Dayton
Los Angeles
Indianapolis
Norfolk
Roanoke
Miami
Winston-Salem
San Francisco
Greensboro
San Diego

Were Newark or Kansas City ever crew bases?

Does anyone have the year openings and closings of these bases? I think LAX closed in 1997 or 1998.

^Don't know about all of those, but Dayton was a hub for Piedmont, never a "base".

Becareful, I'm pretty sure we're all in agreement that TEMPE (a/k/a PHX) will be mecca, masterbase, etc...Furthermore, we will be forced to learn all varieties of cacti that grow in Maricopa County, AZ.

Actually EMBFA, I don't believe that IND was ever a crew base for USAir(ways) other than for an Express carrier. When PSA cut over to USAir in April 1988 (19 years ago yesterday), IND, MCI, and CLE were all major focus cities for USAir, but not crew bases. At cutover, US flew non-stops from LAX/SFO to IND, MCI, and CLE on 737-300's of course (it was a Colodny favorite). As Jim already stated, SYR was a PI crew base following their acquisition of Empire Airlines in 1986.

Unfortunately, the writing seems to be on the wall. In a long tradition of closed bases.

It comes with the territory of working for an airline. Since 9/11, UA has closed CDG, MIA, PHL, EWR, TPE, and SCL (all AFA-represented bases). BKK and SIN, bases that were inherited from the Pan Am route purchase in '86, were closed after the first furloughs following 9/11. Contractually, UA could not keep them open once AFA-represented flight attendants started being furloughed.

Now that UA has been on a hiring spree (and the newbies are dropping like flies, but I digress) BKK and SIN have been re-opened. The F/A's that fly out of those bases are referred to as "Regionals" and are not AFA-represented. True to form of Asian graciousness, they provide some of the best service in the Pacific...

LAS is still an America West base. It only has reserve lines but we have more departures from LAS then we do PHX

With this in mind, can someone from the WEST explain why a full crew base was never established in LAS when the operation is so Big? Seems kind of foolish when you have an area growing and demand for service increasing.
