FURY AS AIR JOBS AXED

Nov 16 2004

Exclusive By Alexandra Williams

ANGRY airport staff vandalised equipment at Heathrow yesterday after they were told 1,000 jobs were being axed.

Troubled Swissport, the airport's second largest baggage handler, laid off workers at midnight last night, prompting fears of chaos and delays.

Rumours of cuts had been rife for several weeks. But the Transport and General Workers' Union had been in talks with the company in a bid to save the jobs which include check-in staff, cleaners, ticketing workers, flight operation assistants and baggage handlers.

A source said last night: "There are people in tears. They don't know what the hell they are going to do.

"There's been talk of this for a while but a lot of people thought there would be a compromise."

Swissport serves 21 airlines including Aer Lingus El Al, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore Airlines.

Staff have been in a long-running pay dispute with the company and staged a 48-hour strike last November.

The company made profits of £46million in 2002 and employs 20,000 people in 33 countries.

It handles 1.8 million flights and 65 million passengers every year.

Last night a spokeswoman for Heathrow said: "There has been no formal notification."
