All logic tells me that if on an international flight economy is oversold and there are seats in business and first, they will fill those seats to accommodate all revenue pax who do not have a seat assignment. however, i have heard from a few people today that those seats (business and first) will either go out empty or with a nonrev. any truth to this?

The priority for upgrades will be to Y passengers who can support an upgrade, either through $ or miles.

After that, non-revs would generally get the seats before operational upgrades from Y.

The last resort would be op ups. They would not go out with empty seats if it means leaving people behind.

However, ask yourself. Would you want to be a full-fare first or business class customer seated next to someone who got their seat for an economy class fare?

Have to let the truth be known, the company would rather have an on time departure than fill an empty seat. The only reason a seat would be filled would be if the captain while at the gate and barring any weight restrictions, would usually ask that every single seat be filled.

The company does not think about the revenue from employees nor BP 5's, they want to make the station goal of on time. Believe me I have been directed by management to leave non rev's at the gate for an on time departure...even if there has been an ATC imposed from Chicago!
