Hymie’s in PHL was great. I always went and got the Balebos; one pond of meat! The guys there used to joke around with me about being able to eat the whole thing in one sitting. It was replaced by some generic place that you could probably find in any mall or airport around the country.

Are you guys talking about the Jim’s down the road from the Holiday Inn? All the Rocky stuff in there? I had a $15 cheesesteak there.

Funny thing, the best I ever had was that pizza place across the road from Carnot. They used garlic bread for the bun which just sooooo good. And I never had to spend any extra time in recurrent, if you know what I mean.

Actually, this is pretty accurate, imo. Tony Lukes' roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe is the best...unfortunately it's also a heart attack on a bun.


Several years ago, a few high school students did a piece for I think the Philly Inquirer where they tried and evaluated many different steak places throughout their summer vacation. I have found that I agree with most if not all of their choices and recommendations. I will try to dig up the article online.

Edited to add the web page. The PI printed a more cohesive list of their picks and notes but it doesn't appear to have made it online.

IMHO .... the best, very BEST Cheesesteak sandwich EVER, came from the Employee Cafeteria in PHL! Search as I may ... I cannot find any place that that can equal that flavor.

I Retired 10 years ago ... so have no idea whether that fact holds true to this date. I also now have two Stents in my Heart Arteries so maybe all that delightful taste was a mistake! But it was worth it!! YUMMMM!!

You're right about the roll - closest we ever came to a good one here in Tidewater was when a guy brought them in fresh everyday from Philly - they were good (but still not quite the same).

I hope ORF keeps some big jets; I'm not going to fit into the seat of the commuter's anymore.

Okay now you've gone and done it--I'm a Pa gal out west and really miss Philly cheesesteaks. Had one the night before the new livery flight and was in 7th heaven--please bring some to reno if you stop by Phl---send them with pax or just about any way you can get them here. Anyone coming from Altoona please also bring Texas hot dogs from the shop in downtown. okay now I'm really starved!!!

That's it: If y'all have the buck28 RT from orf to phl this weekend I'm flying up for a cheese wit...

Must be my lucky day - the $128 fare was there. Let y'all know how it was next week.
 
😛 In Philly it's a HOAGIE not a sub. Tony Luke's at front and oregon has the best steaks and sandwiches around, try the chicken supreme, pure heaven.

That place has been gone for some time now.

Philly was jammed. Army/Navy game. Cheesesteaks were good. Can't even remember the name of the place but it's about 10 or 12 blocks South of city center on 12th. Then had one on the way out of town at Geno's on 9th - wasn't impressed.
So long.
 
Not to change the 'food' topic but....I absolutely love the apple dumplings from the Amish at the Reading Terminal Station....they have a small diner/countertop inside that makes blueberry pancakes and apple dumplings to die for. Anyone have that recipe?
