What's new

PHL Gates

That would be funny. Having 140 people sitting in A/B/C lines on the floor waiting for their flight to Burbank (via Detroit, Chicago, Omaha, Las Vegas, and Reno) while an A330 full of US passengers bound to Rome has to wade through them, in a hurry to get to their seats and a glass of $3/bottle wine.

The NEW DELTA should be using the A gates during the day with larger equipment, freeing up gates in Terminal F for the competition to use with their smaller jets. But I think the old and current LCC should be doing that now.

No one would be wading through anyone. If WN were to use those gates in the AM hours then there would be no problem.
Except that WN or any other airline wouldn't want to start new service if they could only operate it half of each day.

Now if US would agree that one of it's airplanes wouldn't use the gates except for one hour after scheduled arrival and one hour before scheduled departure, and the gate had to be available before those hours started and as soon as they elapsed, you might be able to work something out.

Speaking of PHL being a cramped airport with no room to grow, is it me or did they really use up lots of land for the "F" terminal? From the air it just seems like a lot of open space and the odd shape of the terminal.

They had to be careful not to dig up the area where Jimmy Hoffa is presumed to have been buried.

Philly's problem is really not gates, it's runway and airspace. US doesn't take delays today because of a lack of gate space, the delays are getting into PHL. Until that is resolved, the gate space issue is somewhat academic. If the airport is able to move Delta, then Southwest will be able to add more flights and make the real problem worse.

Well gates are actually some of the problem or at least the overall design of PHL. Much of the airport is designed in finger like terminals that are not far enough apart. So when one plane pushes back at the south(not positive on directions) end of Terminal D lets say then every plane that is taxing to the south end of D and north end of C and every plane also ready to push back from the same area have to wait for the plane to clear. In many cases that can cause a 3 or 4 plane back up which then causes a trickle down effect.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard over the PA that we were waiting for an aircraft to move out of our way in the alley.... PHL is a true combo of things that make it, well just not work that good. You could build all the new terminals and rundways but if you can't land or get in the air due to air traffic whats the sense?

Is there a plan to reconfigure the runways and airspace for Philadelphia? Thought I remember something about this, perhaps others have current information,
