What's new

PHX Fog Saturday?

So if we cancel flights and can't protect passengers on our own flights, the unions would rather see us protect them on other airlines???
Did you ever thank that maybe the schedulers, many of whom alo haven't had days off around the holidays, had to work an extremely long day as well? Some were called in on their days off, or from vacation, to help out.

No, what we want is for schedulers to abide by the CBA. If we time out, we time out. We are not machines, at some point a person can become so fatigued that they are no longer safe to fly. Remember....safety first.

Sounds like you schedulers need to unionize and get yourselves a contract...then they wouldn't be calling you to *gasp* work on a "day off" or "vacation day". 🙂

Sorry, but don't think you'll find much sympathy for crew scheduling on this forum....

Asking someone if they can volunteer to work over their duty day is not a violation. And schedulers can not FORCE any crew member to do anything. They can also not discipline any crew member for something they do or do not do.

Schedulers don't purposely violate the CBA. Yes, some provisions might be interpreted differently by schedulers than by crew members, but those interpretations typically come down from management.

Yes, there are rude and unprofessional schedulers out there . just like there are rude and unprofessional crew members out there. But keep in mind they are only doing thier jobs: trying to fill open trips with the often very limited resources they have.

And The tooth fairy is real too!!! That's the funniest thing I've ever heard and don't even work for US.
I like all of our schedulers but I remember that I was once BLATANTLY lied to...it was March 4th, 1989--I haven't forgotten! I tried to call in sick since it was my birthday and Fred said that there was a teletype by Ed Colodny stating that anyone who called in sick on that day would be immediately terminated. This was the day that Eastern shut-down.

Just want to reinterate that I never said asking someone to volunteer is violating the CBA. I also never said you guys "FORCE" us to do anything. What I said was "If we time out, we time out. We are not machines, at some point a person can become so fatigued that they are no longer safe to fly." The way I figure it, once a crew member reaches the point that it's going to be a 14+ hour duty day...they're going to be fatigued and hence, not safe.

It's funny how most contracts do get interpreted differently, especially when it benefits the company. I certainly don't see the schedulers going out of there way to make sure they don't violate the contract by mistake either. We all know a contract would NEVER be violated by scheduling on purpose. 😉

I don't envy your job one iota that is for sure....

Luckily, I got out of scheduling a while ago! 😀

I was replying to what you put in your post that schedulers should abide by the CBA (100% agreed), and then that "if we time out, we time out" (also agreed). I interpreted that to mean that you believe trying to get someone to work over 14.5 hours is a violation. I guess I misintepreted (hmm .that also came down from managment! 😛

I honestly don't envy your job either. I worked in retail for a long time, so I know what it's like to work long hours dealing with grumpy customers.

BTW ..LOVE the Clinton/Bush icon! 😀

Lucky indeed! 😀 Just replied so there wasn't a misunderstanding.

And about the icon...thanks! 😀

Sounds like you lied to the scheduler, too -- calling in sick when you weren't sick but just wanted your birthday off.

when me crew declines to volunteer over 14.5 because it would probably take us in to 17 hr duty day.... we should not be spoken to like caged animals having scheduling tell us we are not released and we must wait or call back. We are projected , we just want to go home! If I ever got caught speaking to a passenger like that I would be fired.

I'm not making excuses for the way schedulers sometimes talk to crew members, because yes it does happen. But there are also many times when crew members talk to schedulers in a way they shouldn't.

I agree not all crew members are patient and kind to there co workers - including schedulers and Vise Versa... However... If flight attendant A contacts the scheduler (xyz) and uses fowl langague and gesters, etc.... they should be punished.
But when Flight Attendant B contacts the scheduler (xyz) that scheduler (XYZ) should not take out there anger on Flight Attendant B due from Flight Attendant A rude comments ...

Or the pilots for that matter....
If I was to treat passenger 15A nasty because passenger 12A cursed at me I would be fired. Same should go for the scheduling dept...

What a concept. 😀
