Has anyone attended the PLI(Performance Leadership Initiative) presentation yet?

It's been scheduled once or twice at STL, then cancelled at the last minute.

APFA was pushing them bigtime until the Executive Compensation issue started and then announced they would not be participating in the meetings....

They could barely get anyone to go at DFW, but the story goes that Intl sellout Donny V. is running the show with management and the Boston Consulting group. They are going to show you a bunch of charts and graphs about how great you have it at AA, but we need to be more like SWA except in pay. Basically a bunch of useless BS and fear tactics - any ideas are noted and then promptly thrown out.

Bingo..., It was mandatory for FSvc CCs. Exactly right, a bunch of charts and a "we need to be like SWA" presentation by one of our union brothers  along with the Pres of the local sitting up front kinda made me sick. Even though we got paid to attend several of us couldn't put up with the BS and walked out.

Our meeting for A/C Maint here at DFW was very entertaining. We had our maint. manager and a couple of other managment types, we had big Don, Kieth and some other local union guys and the very attractive young lady from that Boston consulting group....there were about 15 of us and we let them all know how bad the moral is and how little trust we have in both management and our union. The meeting lasted almost 5 hrs and niether the union or local managment heard a word we said. They just tried to get through thier rehearsed speeches and didn't seem very interested in what our concerns are or any ideas we might have. We got doughnuts though.

JFK is scheduled starting next week. They tried having it a couple of weeks ago because the local membership argued that it wasnt mandatory and it was postponed.
We are waiting to find out if is mandatory and if it is, the local is insisting on overtime pay because it is off shift and not training.

But I do agree with AMFA man that AA wants to mirror SWA cost structure except in pay.
The other thing is that SWA does not have the numerous layers of management that AA has. Im sure that is another exception from the PLI.

Really? How many layers do they have versus AA? How many ASMs do they fly per management head versus AA?

We had the PLI meetings here in MIA.
You were supposed to attend either before or after shift.
That didnt work out very well so they held them during shift and encouraged you to go.
I personnally did not attend. Not interested in hearing the same BS about how the employees have to give more. There were some union reps involved in the presentation promoting the PLI and what the company was trying to put forward to all of us. I have heard the speech before. I'm not interested in hearing it again. Just my opinion.

Don't get defensive conected1!

look at the "level system" of AA:

supv, general foreman, manager, director, vice president, sr vice president, ceo. 7 Layers!

SWA levels:
supv, manager, vice president, ceo. 4 layers.

I've been to one, and I must say I was more concerned about Donny Vs attitude than managements. This guy just can't get over himself. He is a self important, pompous, jackass. With his not so veiled threats to class two stations, and his arrogant demeanor, he comes across as more of a company hitman than anything else. There was this uneasy feeling, that the meeting was meerly a front, and some sort of backroom deal had already been cut. The patronizing tone Donny V had towards the meeting attendees contradicted the meetings purpose. B)

I forgot to mention. The JFK based maintenance crew chief is on the PLI committee and he is travelling giving the presentations. He revealed that SWA has 4 layers of management from worker to CEO.. AMR has 7.

Maybe now is the time to ask ...again: how much are the "virtual" overhaul amts at SWA paid? And by not having heavy maintenance in-house maybe SWA can have fewer layers of management? Or maybe, just maybe their workers need less adult supervision?

How many layers of management does the average bus company have?

You are correct about not mirroring SWA management, I am told that was brought up but also promptly dismissed.

Well according to ECLAT (AA and twu's favorite) and they would never lie according to the twu, AA has risen from outsourcing 20.7% in 2003 to 25.3% in 2005. SWA has dropped from 53.6% in 2003 to 51.8% in 2005. BTW they are down from 60% in 2000. SWA is also building new hangars at DAL to bring in even more work.
