Robot attacked Swedish factory worker

A Swedish company has been fined 25,000 kronor ($3,000) after a malfunctioning robot attacked and almost killed one of its workers at a factory north of Stockholm.

Naturally Obama is at fault.

I do not think the 'news' piece was well written and I think it is harmful to the robotics industry. There is no such thing as AI yet and to imply that the robot "came to life' and "attacked" someone seems to imply just that. The robot did not come to life, and did not attack anyone. It was activated either by motion or a malfunction and carried out it's program. HAL 9000 does not exist quite yet.

Might I add...................................................................
.......that you know of !

Unless maybe you have insider info on all the tech being used around the world !

Maybe we could some pork...........................err, stimulus money Intel's way, towards the manufacture of "The Nobama-bot". That way Nobama could fire all of his czars and CEO's and replace them with...................................himself.

Teleprompter included with every Bot !

Wow, some of you really need to seek help about your obsession.

Why does this thread exist?

Why not?
Do dissenting and sometimes offensive viewpoints affect your sensibilities?
I have seen as much (if not more) regarding the Bush administration so why so offensive?
Does it bother you that there might be a ‘glimmer’ of truth in some of these posts? (not this thread in particular)
Are you one to ‘squash’ another persons opinion as it does not adhere to ‘your’ standards?

Yes.

Given that computers have only been around for a relatively short period of time and given the computing power needed to make complex decisions based on massive amounts of data it is highly unlikely that an AI computer exists. There are robots that can perform If=then processes but that is not AI. I also find it highly unlikely that such advances in computer technology could be kept quite for any length of time.

Like I said, it must be nice to be privy to Intel's every secret project !

Were you also privy to the insider info of cloning Dolly , before it took place ?

No, but I am also pretty sure that we do not have transporters and warp drives either but who knows, may be those are being kept secret as well along with the guys who gave them too us 60 years ago.

As far as cloning is concerned, I was aware of genetic engineering taking place long before Dolly was cloned. I was also aware that two ewes were created using the identical process that as used to create Dolly but IIRC, one was created using sheep and the others using a ewe. So the foundation for cloning was already there.

While I am sure that there are advances being made in labs through out the world in AI, I do not believe HAL 9000 is a reality nor do I believe that a factory dealing with rocks has a AI robot working on the premises.

Lets not dismiss the advances in technology....sometimes science fiction becomes reality.

Transparent aluminium is 'new state of matter'

(PhysOrg.com) -- Oxford scientists have created a transparent form of aluminium by bombarding the metal with the world’s most powerful soft X-ray laser. 'Transparent aluminium' previously only existed in science fiction, featuring in the movie Star Trek IV, but the real material is an exotic new state of matter with implications for planetary science and nuclear fusion.

I agree 100%. Advances in tech occur all the time with amazing results. The B2 and F117 could not fly with out computers. Facial recognition, voice recognition, cars that are 'learning' how to drive them selves. All amazing feats. How ever, the articles I have read have all agreed that the computing power for true AI is still somewhere in the future. The ability to actually think and learn like "Data" from Star Trek or HAL 9000 involve massive amounts of code, algorithms and sensory abilities that are as yet no in existence.

While it is possible that the military or other private corporations are farther along than publicly acknowledged, nothing I have read or heard indicates that we have anything to worry about for the near future.
