Once upon a time, former Presidents used to take a low profile and return to private life after leaving office.
To wit, I don't recall seeing Nixon, Ford, Carter, or Reagan out on the campaign trail. Bush 41 made a few appearances with his son, but didn't do much for McCain except perhaps a few fundraisers.

Clinton has been the exception to that. But like Obama, he's also a narcissist and can't stand to be out of the limelight.
