Service to Wilmington DE

I seem to remember when I was a kid Allegheny Commuter serving Millville, NJ from Philly with a Twin Otter.

Correct. Southern Jersey Airways, circa 1979-81. Timetable showed it as "Millville/Bridgeton/Vineland".
Isn't that Piney Bob's neck of the woods?

Shuttle America, the original Dash 8 airline served Wilmington and trenton as an independent LCC. In thier US Airways Express Saab existence, they flew from Trenton NJ to Bedford MA and I think Pittsburgh only once a day or so. It was even a crew base for Shuttle America.

I've always wondered if some of these smaller outlying towns from big hubs could be served by helicopter. It seems like alot of people would happily board a helicopter in Philly Northeast, Trenton, Wilmington, Atlantic City, South Jersey etc to connect in Philly especially if there was free parking and a hassle free check in. I don't know hoe profitable passenger helicopters are but perhaps they would be better for true commuter service.

Mainline USAir flew from TTN-PIT in the Mid 90's. Equipment used on this route were the DC9-30, F-100 and the F28-4000. Loads we very good on this route. Also Piedmont Comuter flew TTN-BWI with the flying Winibago and then Metros. Just a side note on TTN, Eastwind flew GSO-TTN-BOS and did VERY VERY well. The morning fog at Trenton did cause problems as there is no ILS system in place.

The "original" Allegheny " served ILG from DCA and I know of 1 flight that operated BDR-ISP-ILG-DCA, with both the Convair 440 and the Martin 202. This was in 1961 62.

Don't kill the new guy!

I grew up in this area, and remember Piedmont having some operations here in the early 80's. Not sure when it ended though. Wikipedia states somewhere around the 1989 buy-out. But I don't recall it being that late.

I think it ended in the 87-88 area. BWI-ILG & TTN ended around the same time.

With traffic rebounding, I almost wonder if it makes sense to revisit the service to some of these smaller cities. I still think a TTN-CLT flight could work, for example.

Wilmington is so well served by Amtrak (after a fashion) that I think only ILG-CLT would be remotely feasible on LCC.

Runway 6 at TTN has had an ILS for many years with 200' AGL and 1/2 mile minimums. Rarely is the fog so bad that those minimums are met.

However even stranger, US used to serve the Northeast Philadelphia Airport(PNE) with close to 6 flighs a day to PHL with Allegheny Commuter flights.
It was actually Ransome airlines that was marketing/flying those trips out of PNE. Interesting history of their partnership: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ransome_Airlines

I have seen the 747 that is sometimes AirForce One doing touch and go exercises at ILG.

🙂
