Sky West to fly for US Airways

Under a tentative accord signed late Oct. 17, US Airways has agreed to extend Mesa Air’s current Bombardier CRJ900 contract by 39 months to September 2015. This arrangement keeps 38 aircraft in operation beyond the initial contract’s 2012 expiration, a key condition of Mesa Air’s proposed reorganization.

The legacy carrier, however, has not extended its contract on eight Bombardier CRJ200s or six Dash 8 turboprops also operated by Mesa Air. With this decision, the CRJ200s will be dropped from US Airways Express’ fleet by June 2012, while US Airways has the right to eliminate the Dash 8s with six months’ notice.

The continued use of these 14 aircraft was also part of Mesa Air’s restructuring, and while the regional is not commenting on this, US Airways appears to assume Mesa Air will still exit Chapter 11.

Mesa Air’s plan of reorganization also offered US Airways a 10% stake in the post-bankruptcy carrier and $5.5 million in notes due in 2015

Am I the only person who was surprised to learn that there's a regional airline out there that doesn't already fly for US? 😀

When I first saw this I thought, Well they contract with everyone else so why not Sky West?

Then I read the article and folks ANYTHING that removes Mesa, the scar upon the aviation landscape can't be bad news. Johnny O and his putrid little airline need to be gone.

While SkyWest is a great regional airline airline, does US really need yet another contract carrier? Doesn't US ( the smallest network carrier) already have more contract carriers than any other network airline?

But as Sparrow points out, if it reduces Mesa's role, it is a good thing.

And dredge up my suppressed memories of the hours spent waiting out my Air Whiskey mx delays?
I have been told that a lot of Air Wisconsin maintenance delays are because the crj200 is problematic. I guess Sky West needs to teach them a lesson on aircraft utilization and maintenance work load

It wouldn't surprise me. I try to avoid the CRJ-200, if I can. I like the Dash better, even if both are Air Whiskey.

The DH8 is Piedmont on the east side

I stand corrected. I haven't flown the PHL-AVP-PHL route regularly since 2008, but the Dash-8's are Piedmont. No wonder why I like them better! I hate the CRJ's, which I believe are all Air Whiskey on this route, although one time I was saved by an MX on a CRJ.
