Commuter Plane Crashes Into N.C. Hangar

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A commuter airplane crashed into a hangar Wednesday at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, injuring at least some of the 19 people aboard.

The plane was US Airways Express flight 5481 with 19 passengers and a crew of two, the television station reported.

The crash occurred as the plane was taking off.

AIR MIDWEST FLIGHT 5481 NOTIFICATION #1
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 8, 2003 - Air Midwest flight 5481, a Beechcraft-19 going from Charlotte, N.C., to Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C., has been involved in an accident in Charlotte.

Flight 5481 was operating as a US Airways Express flight.

The preliminary passenger list indicates that the aircraft carried 19 passengers and two crewmembers, although these numbers are subject to revision.

US Airways has established a special toll-free telephone number to call for information about those on board Flight 5481. The number is 1-800-679-8215.

US Airways will provide information on an ongoing basis as it becomes available. Updates will be posted to US Airways' Web site at usairways.com. The contact number for media to call is 1-703-872-5100.

My sincere condolences to the families of the crew and passengers. This crash comes at such a critical time for all of us. We need to give our passengers confidence in the safety and viability of U and all of the wholly owned and subsidiaries.

They just reported 2 people on the ground are missing and they just took someone who was on the ground away in an ambulance
